Schwarzman BuildingReporting To: Charles ArrowsmithCompensation: $70,000 - $75,000 / yearDescriptionOverviewThe Library's Communications & Marketing Departmentis responsible for advancing the Library's mission and priorities through the promotion of its services, resources, locations, collections, programs, events, and exhibitions to a broad array of audiences and communities, both external and internal. Leveraging both print and digital platforms and channels, the Department positions the Library as a cultural and educational leader and seeks to attract and engage new audiences across New York City and around the world.The New York Public Library's Communications & Marketing Department is seeking an Editor who is responsible for project-managing, editing, and writing clear, concise, and compelling copy and materials for an array of audiences, including staff, current and potential users, Library staff, donors, Trustees, and other stakeholders. The Editor is responsible for overseeing and/or contributing to the production of a variety of internal and external materials and platforms, such as print and digital publications, marketing collateral of all forms, signage and other visitor experience materials, and the Library's website. The Editor will be a critical part of the Creative Services team ensuring messaging and branding are consistent across all media and that high-quality communications projects are produced in a timely manner.We are looking for someone we can count on to:Own:
  • Take ownership ofall aspects of print and online editorial needs-from assessment to development and implementation, and in close collaboration with the design team.
Teach:
  • Represent the Library's brand and style as an ambassador of the editorial team.
Learn:
  • Become immersed inthe Library's brand, voice, and style, as well as how to apply them and ensure consistency across all platforms.
Improve:
  • Contribute to honing and maintaining of efficient workflows and working collaboratively with colleagues across the team.
Some expectations for this role are that within:1 month, this person will:
  • Read, revise, and proofread a wide variety of projects.
  • Become familiar with the department's workflows and processes.
  • Learn NYPL's brand guidelines and best practices.
3 months, this person will:
  • Support the creation of project briefs, timelines, and production schedules.
  • Support greater integration of projects with other NYPL promotion campaigns.
6 months and beyond, this person will:
  • Take the lead on new incoming projects from start to finish.
Responsibilities
  • Manage all aspects of the timely production of internal and external Library materials and publications, from scheduling and content development to design, approvals, production, distribution, and promotion.
  • Develop and manage materials for campaigns and promotions.
  • Develop and manage content and collateral for key Library programs and events.
  • Develop and fact-check signage, guides, and other materials for branches and research centers.
  • Write, edit, copyedit, and proofread a variety of other materials as needed for departments and initiatives across the Library.
  • Represent the Communications and Creative Services team at internal meetings; evaluate project requests and develop creative solutions.
  • Maintain high standards of service excellence both within Communications and for other Library stakeholders.
  • Other responsibilities as needed.
Required Education, Experience & SkillsRequired Education & Certifications
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, literature, or a related field.
Required Experience
  • 3-5 years of relevant work experience in communications, marketing, publishing, journalism, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must include hands-on responsibility for developing, writing, editing, and project-managing print and/or online publications.
Required Skills
  • Excellent writing, research, and reporting/interviewing skills, and the ability to line edit, copyedit, and proofread content for clarity, consistency, accuracy, and style.
  • Working with house style guides and/or The Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Proven ability to translate complex topics and tailor writing style to various audiences.
  • Ability to comprehend communications strategies and offer solutions and unique creative concepts that support goals and objectives.
  • Ability to thrive well in a fast-paced team environment with a proactive approach and a highly responsive work style.
  • Ability to collaborate with designers and other stakeholders and to project-manage publications and collateral to meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong presentational, organizational, and interpersonal skills; highly professional.
  • Advanced computer skills.
