Ten Speed Press is seeking an Editor to join our team. This position will play an essential role on Ten Speed's acquisitions team, acquiring 6 to 8 projects and editing 8 to 10 books a year, primarily cookbooks but also acquiring in the lifestyle and gift space. The Editor will work in collaboration and in regular communication with our design, production, marketing, and publicity teams, bringing our titles to market quickly and brilliantly. We expect the Editor to develop a list that speaks to, and is representative of, the diversity of our potential audiences and our society as a whole.   • Generates new book ideas based on talent, market trends, and opportunity; prospects and develops new authors and collaborators.
  • Evaluates book proposals and researches the efficacy, opportunity, distinctiveness, and risk of potential acquisitions, including running p&ls, pulling competitive titles, and creating title sheets.
  • Develops and nurtures relationships with agents, including contract negotiations.
  • Engages and partners with authors to fully realize their vision, collaborating throughout the acquisition and production processes with them as well as with designers, art directors, and production teams.
  • Communicates complex production schedules, working with various stakeholders to problem solve in creative ways.
  • Collaborates with designers, art directors, and production teams, as well as with sales, publicity, and marketing teams, to publish and position books as efficiently and effectively as possible.
  • Represents the publishing, design, and production teams when working with the author, and represents the author when working with our publishing, design, and production teams.
Requirements:
  • Minimum 3 years of editorial experience working on complex, full-color books or other content-rich media spaces that integrate text and visuals
  • Strong understanding of culinary processes and methods (direct experience in recipe writing and editing is a must)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with popular and emerging social media platforms
  • In-depth understanding of the intricacies of the acquiring process, and a strong record of acquisitions or editorial assignments
  • Direct experience taking multiple concurrent projects from conception to completion
  • Strong record of meeting deadlines with effective organization and prioritization skills
  • Diplomacy and sensitivity in handling delicate conversations with multiple parties within a collaborative environment
  • Extensive team coordination experience (including designers, photographers, and writer-author collaborations)
The salary range for this position is $70,000 - $73,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.
