Join the team at Farrar, Straus and Giroux and Picador. We're looking for an editorial assistant who has a broad range of interests to work closely with an FSG executive editor and Picador's associate publisher on a range of frontlist FSG nonfiction titles, as well as across our fiction and nonfiction backlist titles on the Picador paperback list. Our ideal candidate will be a thoughtful reader with a passion for books and the publishing process, a curious self-starter who works well independently but is energized by collaboration. Intellectual curiosity is a must, as is a strong engagement with great writing, serious thinking, and current events; time management; devotion to follow-through; confidence in communication; and top-notch organizational skills. Experience outside of book publishing is highly prized. Strong copy writing skills are treasured. Bring enthusiasm and fresh ideas! What you'll do:

  • Coordinate all aspects of a fast-paced, high-volume editorial desk.
  • Read and evaluate book proposals and manuscripts under consideration.
  • Assist in managing the paperback reprint seasonal launch schedule.
  • Assist in overseeing the tip and launch sheet process, including support with competitive title analysis and suggestions.
  • Track and assist in managing manuscripts through the production process.
  • Write and/or edit various copy types including flap copy, catalog copy, launch sheets, and tip sheets.
  • Support the Picador team in developing backlist campaigns and managing various backlist projects.
  • Serve as a liaison between editorial, production, design, marketing, publicity, and sales departments.
  • Initiate and manage correspondence with authors and agents throughout the publishing process.
  • Provide basic editorial support, including preparing and editing introductions, reviewing revisions with authors, and creating launch materials for reissues.
  • Read and analyze sales data.

  • Ability to multitask, good organizational skills and attention to detail; dogged follow-up skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and work independently.
Ideal experience:
  • Prior publishing experience preferred but not required
  • Work in an office environment and/or a fast-paced environment
  • Work independently on projects from inception to completion
This role will have an annual salary of $47,500.
