The Education Coordinator must work cross functionally, establishing and maintaining key relationships with all areas of the school. Having access to confidential information, discretion and independent judgement is required. A strong grasp of curriculum, development and implementations as well as the ability to mentor and foster growth in our educators and promote and enhance student engagement throughout the school day is expected. Position Type & Expected Hours of Work:
- As an exempt role, there may be additional work required outside these hours as dictated by the needs of our students and/or the program.
- Please note: Holidays/school breaks may fall during regularly scheduled shifts. They are still workdays unless approved otherwise by department director.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Provide overall responsibility for hiring, performance, development, documentation and talent management for assigned teachers and support staff.
- Provide direct support, assistance, staff development and guidance to assigned teachers and support staff, in the improvement of instructional performance and curriculum. This includes but is not limited to:
- Weekly supervision meeting with each assigned teacher targeting growth areas and fostering improvement
- Weekly classroom observations to inform supervision meetings as well as to observe student levels of engagement to enhance student performance and promote student growth
- Mentor through lesson plan writing and curriculum development process
- Mentor through classroom management, including managing support staff
- Evaluate the effectiveness of instructional methods as performed by assigned teaching staff viaformal and informal observations
- Proactively assist and make recommendations to the Director of Education, in curriculum development, implementation, and revision based on observations of assigned teaching staff
- Proactively handle communication with district inquiries, questions, concerns as needed in coordination with Director of Education
- Develop and conduct staff wide professional development
- Attend, lead, and support ITEP meetings as assigned by the Director of Education
- Coordinate and attend meetings within the various departments of the school wide staff
- Work collaboratively with various members of the students' educational team to ensure an effective program is being implemented:
- Coordinate, set up, support weekly family calls during the education day
- Coordinate weekly Transdisciplinary meetings for student teams
Requirements: Experience & Education:
- Master's Degree in Education
- Minimum of 5 years teaching experience
- NYS Special Education Certification
Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to guide, develop and train teachers effectively in various techniques and strategies based upon adult learning theory and differentiation based upon the learning style of the staff member
- Ability to handle challenging physical and verbal behaviors
- Ability to get trained in TCIS and remain current on all required training
- Ability to lead and manage during crisis situations by implementing TCIS techniques
- Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with all levels of staff throughout Shrub Oak, students, districts and constituents
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and a proven ability to both complete and train others in the completion of relevant documentation
- Superior problem solving, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to think critically, handle multiple priorities simultaneously
- Ability to assess students' learning characteristics to assist in designing appropriate educational programs
- Ability to facilitate direction to various staffing groups (education, support staff, Campus Life, etc.)
- Ability to think analytically, assessing a variety of information to make complex judgements on strategic and tactical academic programming
- Skilled at proactively identifying students' situations, outcomes, responding appropriately, and directing staff regarding the same
Physical Requirements/Demands: A workday regularly includes multiple or conflicting demands, deadlines and time pressures; work regularly requires sustained concentration. Standing for sustained periods of time, bending, stretching, walking up and down stairs (building has 6 floors), around a hilly campus as needed, may also require walking between floors or between buildings at a moment's notice. May need to lift/moveitems at times weighing at least 25 pounds. Work Environment: We are a boarding school located on a 127-acre campus. The work environment will include both indoor and outdoor spaces, mostly inside the classroom or educational environment. May include work within the residential setting. The building has 6 floors accessible by staircases and elevators.
