Position Type: Support Staff - Instructional Support/Educational Interpreter (D/HH)Date Posted: 6/24/2024Location: District WideDate Available: 08/26/2024STARTING WAGE: $27.44+ per hour (based on experince) Position Summary The Educational Interpreter facilitates communication among deaf and hard of hearing students (D/HH) and their hearing peers, classroom teacher and other staff in the school system. The educational interpreter will tutor D/HH students and teach sign language to peers and staff. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Provide expressive and voice interpreting for direct instruction within the school in a language or mode that is understandable to the student who is deaf or hard of hearing. Examples of tasks include: sign and voice for the student and interpret spoken words or signs including the nuances of spoken English which surrounds a message. Prepare for and tutor D/HH students on classroom content and teach new sign vocabulary resulting in student's enhanced learning. Examples of tasks include: assist in setup of note taking services, provide tutoring, review material that has been recently presented in class, preview materials to understand content, introduction of new vocabulary, research and establish signs for vocabulary that may be used in upcoming lessons, communicate with teachers regarding upcoming lesson plans and participate in team meetings. Team-teach student peers and staff sign language resulting in increased sign activities. Examples of tasks include: prepare lesson plans, teach classes and provide learner feedback. Assist in ordering D/HH materials. Participate in IEP meetings. Participate in educational assessments, provided the interpreter is not already attending the meeting and create support materials. Meet with D/HH teacher and classroom teachers. Interpret special presentations and research using sign language references Provide contact with parents to discuss the student's day and documentation in support of student's IEP. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to achieve an effective and safe learning environment. Qualification Requirements To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Must possess sufficient knowledge of the classroom content and technical terms in order to interpret meaningfully. Prior experience interpreting for D/HH students is desired but not required. Basic computer knowledge and familiarity with sign language references is essential. License Requirements Wisconsin Department of Instruction license #884, progress toward on-going credits required every five years to renew license and the successful passing of the state interpreting exam EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment). Must possess a valid driver's license and proof of insurance. Communication and Language Skills
- Ability to read, interpret and/or prepare a variety of documents, including attendance reports, enrollment reports, disciplinary reports, etc., tests, and instructional materials, confidential files, health cards, reimbursable absence forms, computer manuals, student/parent handbook, purchase orders, etc. using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
- Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures and follow instructions.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from diverse groups of administrators, staff, parents and the public.
- Ability to provide proficient American sign language interpreting on behalf of students, parents and staff.

Physical Attributes While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
