Assist EHS Manager with coordinating the operation's safety, and environmental programs with a passion for improving health and safety culture.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
* Working safely is first priority.
* May accompany MSHA inspectors during any plant or mine inspections.
* Once qualified obtain MSHA instructor certification & fulfill the role of secondary on-site MSHA instructor.
* Assist manager with on-site HSE committee monthly meetings.
* Assist manager with weekly safety compliance audit & area safety inspection programs at the mine and plant.
* Helps manager maintain required compliance documentation required by company policy, state, and federal regulations.
* Perform inspections of mine and plant to identify and correct safety hazards.
* Develop and implement safety training programs for training of mine or plant personnel.
* Gives instructions and training to mine personnel in safe working practices, first aid, and promote safety first attitudes of workers.
* Assists EHS Manager with investigating accidents, reports causes, and recommendations for remedial action to insurance companies, mine management, and state authorities.
* Processes accident reports and initiate's worker's compensation reports. May be required to attend 1st doctor's appointment with injured employee.
* Helps manager with planning and scheduling the annual MSHA refresher training and make-up sessions.
* Receive, review (daily) pre-shift inspection reports of work area. Bring any issues noted on forms to the attention of EHS Manager for follow-up.
ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Become Method 9 certified & coordinate semi-annual method 9 certification sessions.
* Assist with the Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS).
* Maintains filing system to document plant compliance.
* Maintain management system for hazardous waste ensuring proper storage, disposal, labeling, monthly inspections, and recordkeeping.
* Ensures compliance with all universal waste other wastes, such as; solvents, used antifreeze, etc.
* Helps EHS Manager with ensuring that the spill prevention plan (SPCC) and storm water plans are being followed and train employees.
* Assist EHS Manager with well monitoring at the mine and plant.
* Assist with eye-wash station audits.
* Keep track of safety supplies on hand, monitor use and re-supply as necessary.
* Check for faded or broken signs and replacement.
* PPE compliance audit, daily.
* Perform respirator fit tests.
* Assists the EHS manager to perform random and post-accident drug testing.
* Schedule annual employee health testing (audiograms, chest x-rays, & pulmonary function).
* Maintain compliance with the Hazardous Communication Standard.
* Performs dust sampling to detect concentrations of nuisance dusts and/or crystalline silica.
* Perform personal and area noise sampling to ensure compliance with permissible exposure levels.
* Calibrate IH and OCC equipment and have it ready for use as required.
EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
* High school diploma or general education degree (G.E.D.). College degree preferred in Environmental Health or Safety and/or work-related experience for a minimum of two to three (2-3) years training pertaining to safety management, or regulatory reporting.
* Desired to have or willingness to obtain; Method 9 emissions certification, herbicide application certification (for weed control), UST (underground storage tank), hazardous waste management, Hazcom.
* Ability to read and interpret documents, such as; plant permits requirements, compliance documents, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Have the ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, regulators and employees.
* Exhibits confidence in self and others, inspires and motivates others to perform well, effectively influences actions and options of others, accepts feedback from others, gives appropriate recognition to others.
