We currently have an exciting opportunity in our Environmental department. This position specifically is located in Norfolk, Virginia. We are looking for a EHS Intern, the hours are Monday Friday 07:00 16:00.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE This position is a ten week temporary one and will be utilized to support environmental science, occupational health, industrial hygiene and/or safety program development or enhancement. POSITION DEMANDS (EDUCATION/TRAINING) Successful candidates must be currently enrolled (full-time) in a four year college or university. Preference is given to seniors and juniors as well as those enrolled : In a Maritime College or NA&ME Program, And have served aboard a ship at sea, or In an EHS program with a general knowledge of EHS principles, techniques, laws and regulations. Must be available for 10 consecutive weeks. POSITION DEMANDS (REQUIRED EXPERIENCE) Excellent written and oral communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, as well as any computer-aided design and engineering (CAD/CAE) systems, is desirable. General knowledge of ship repair or other manufacturing operations processes and operating procedures with an understanding of the Federal, State and Local regulations impacts is preferred. The ability to effectively interface with and make presentations to Company Leadership. A sense of responsibility and attention to detail of the highest degree. The candidate must be able to walk to all facility locations and occasionally aboard vessels as part of daily inspections and to attend meetings. Previous work experience aboard commercial or navy ships is preferred but not required. An interest and/or prior work experience in ship design, ship repair, construction management and manufacturing processes would be advantageous. Course work in the following areas is also desired: Environmental Engineering, Environmental Health Science, Occupational Heath, Industrial Hygiene or Ergonomics. Position will require contact with all levels within the Company as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks and fulfill essential functions. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES While interning at NASSCO-Norfolk, students will not only be given the opportunity to practically apply the skills they've acquired in the classroom, but they will be expected to become an integral part of the NASSCO-Norfolk team. Because of the complexity that is inherent in ship repair, the EHS Intern will find endless avenues for contribution and learning. Specifically, interns can anticipate involvement in and exposure to the following areas: Company Management, Environmental Protection, Health (Industrial Hygiene) and Occupational Safety, Material flow and procurement, Program Management, and Production Supervision. ACCOUNTABILITY The EHS Intern will be required to provide weekly status reports to their Supervisor on their progress. The EHS Intern will be required to develop a presentation documenting the outcome of their project/projects while working for the Company. This presentation must be approved by the Company prior to turning into the University for grading. UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Must be able to access all leased and owned property and go aboard ships. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects or controls, and to talk and hear. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is occasionally exposed to dust, welding/burning fumes, smoke and moderate noise levels when performing inspections.
