Responsibilities

The Staff Attorney for the Election Law Program will be responsible for assisting with the Center's legal and other research projects; coding cases for databases; gathering, organizing, and summarizing primary sources for online dissemination; and preparing reports, presentations, training materials, and articles to distribute to academic, governmental, and public audiences.

This research will focus on election administration, as well as constitutional and statutory issues relating to the electoral process. For example, the staff attorney will help prepare fifty-state surveys concerning the differences among states' laws governing provisional ballots and canvassing. The staff attorney will also assist with the preparation of caselaw databases concerning the Anderson-Burdick standard for resolving certain constitutional challenges to election-related rules as well as Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. The staff attorney may also assist with the Center's work concerning election emergencies, including gathering and reviewing the legislative history of existing laws in the field and preparation of a potential model statute. Finally, the staff attorney will also likely help with the Election Law Program's ongoing project on election contests by locating, summarizing, and organizing relevant primary sources for eventual public access through an interactive website.

Additionally, the Staff Attorney will assist the Executive Director of the Election Law Program in cultivating and sustaining external and internal partnerships to advance short-term and long-term goals.

Qualifications

A JD degree and minimum one year of legal practice experience is required. Applicants must also demonstrate the following skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Applicants with an undergraduate or graduate degree in political science, history, public administration, mathematics, statistics, or economics are preferred, but not required.

The anticipated salary range is $100,000-negotiable, depending upon experience.
