Summary

Oversees overall operations of the electric Construction Crews; supervises employees; schedules and supervises the planning of electric construction and maintenance projects; assist with preparing annual department budget; writes specifications for equipment; orders supplies, tools, and materials; prepares required reports; and may perform various electrical work. May act as interim Electric Superintendent during their absence.

Starting Rate: $55.00 per hour - DOQ

This position has a Residency Requirement (HR Policy Manual page 98):

Employees who are likely to be called to work in cases of emergency may be required to reside within reasonable response commuting ranges of their places of work. A reasonable response time to an emergency is thirty (30) minutes.

Residency which allows response time to a City emergency of thirty (30) minutes MUST be established with 90 days of hire.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must have a valid Texas commercial driver's license (A CDL).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities the following requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required, but may not necessarily represent all duties and responsibilities. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Oversees overall operations of the electric department, including monitoring the overall construction, maintenance, and repair of the city's electric system and ensuring that all safety standards are met;
  • Supervises construction crews, including assigning and reviewing work, conducting performance reviews, training employees, and making recommendations regarding hiring, promoting, disciplining, and/or dismissing employees;
  • Schedules and supervises the planning of electric construction and maintenance projects, including, designing construction of new lines, routes, and writing specifications for materials and equipment;
  • Follow, and train all staff members on the Electric Department's adopted safety policy as dictated in the American Public Power Association's Safety Manual;
  • Work closely with Electric Superintendent for crew assignments to complete crossing training of staff doing construction work, service work, and customer service work;
  • Work as a team member promoting good moral of staff and with all City of Brenham customers and employees;
  • Coordinates switching of main feeders;
  • Assist in annual department budget;
  • Monitors SCADA and OMS system and responds to changes or outages as necessary;
  • Assist Crew Leaders, Journey Lineworkers, and Apprentices as needed in their task;
  • Orders supplies, tools, and materials;
  • Prepares required city, state, and federal reports;
  • Attend various re-occurring training as needed;
  • Performs all duties as required of this position;
  • Receives and responds to citizen complaints; and
  • May perform various electrical work.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

High school graduation or its equivalent plus eight years of field experience, at least two of which involved supervision; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge Of

General management principles; electrical system management principles, practices, procedures, and safety codes; budgeting principles and procedures; computers; and standard office practices and procedures.

Skill/Ability To

Operate computers, including word processing and spreadsheet software; maintain and repair electrical systems; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public; develop, organize, motivate, and effectively utilize staff; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and read and interpret manuals, policies, drawings, and other documents.

Valid Texas driver's license. Class A CDL
