Salary: $58,242.08 - $79,046.24 AnnuallyLocation : High Point, NC 27260Job Type: Full-TimeJob Number: 6872Department: Electric Struct&StnsOpening Date: 09/27/2024Closing Date: ContinuousJob DescriptionUnder direction, performs a wide variety of skilled duties in the programming and technical support of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) hardware and software; performs technical tasks in modifying, installing, troubleshooting, repairing SCADA system assets to ensure 24/7 reliability and functionality including protective relay, communications, and controls work associated with high voltage substations and other electric distribution systems automation.; and performs related duties, as assigned. Essential Tasks
  • Utilizes computerized supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system to monitor and control the flow of electricity across the City's power grid;
  • Installing, wiring, repair/replacement, configuration of SEL relays, programmable logic controllers, Remote Terminal Units (RTU's), hubs, switches, routers, and other communication equipment
  • Performs switching activities (i.e. opening/closing switches, breakers, reclosers, etc.) involving electrical substations, transmission lines, and all distribution circuits utilizing the SCADA system during normal and emergency situations;
  • Maintains and updates standard operating procedures (SOPs) for switching procedures (i.e. opening/closing switches, breakers, reclosers, etc.)
  • Identifies abnormal conditions and take corrective actions by reacting appropriately to SCADA alarms;
  • Maintains close communications with distribution crews in the field in order to support field operations and the safety of crews working on distribution lines;
  • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals;
  • Compiles and records operational data in computer and paper logs;
  • Records load/peak information, work orders/maintenance activity, failure reports and alarms;
  • Supports and assists supervisors with tasks and analysis related to load forecasting and system planning activities;
  • Monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety;
  • Reports faulty equipment;
  • Participates in continuing education activities by attending workshops and training sessions, as appropriate.
  • Computer experience is necessary.
  • Substation and/or Transmission experience a plus but not required.
Qualifications
  • Formal Education
    • Formal education which includes reading, writing and math. Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by technical courses in electronics and the repair of electrical utility equipment and some experience in the inspection, repair and maintenance of electrical substations and equipment.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License
  • Experience with Linux is preferred but not required

Physical RequirementsHearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co-workers and citizens. The senses of SIGHT, SMELL, HEARING and TOUCH are Required. Must have physical stamina to withstand working under adverse weather conditions.Visual Abilities - the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:
  • Acuity, far - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Both eyes 20/25 - R 20/30 - L 20/30 corrected.
  • Acuity, near - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see and read diagrams, work orders, detailed construction drawings, wiring connections and small electrical components. Both eyes 20/22 corrected.
  • Depth Perception - Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are. Must be able to judge distances so as to use both hands in performing different tasks at the same. Essential in maintaining proper safety code clearances from high voltage conductors and devices.
  • Field of Vision - Area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point. Must be able to see wide span of area to cover activities going on around him/her while looking at a certain object/article/person. Necessary to view work site during daily routine and emergency situations.
  • Accommodation - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This is especially important when doing near-point work while glancing up to check entire work area.
  • Color Vision - Ability to identify and distinguish colors. Necessary in determining proper phase connections for customers. Necessary in using National Electrical Color Codes for electrical installations and for all Substation, Metering and Conductor tagging and installations.
  • Night Vision - Ability to identify and distinguish between objects at night. Visual acuity to be correctable to 20/40 in either eye.
Environmental ConditionsThe Worker is subject to Inside and Outside Environmental Conditions: Exposed to the various weather conditions and temperatures. The worker is required to work in extremely hot weather and extremely cold weather as well as in rain, sleet, snow, ice, fog, smoke, wind and lightning storms. This may require the individual to wear the same clothing and continue work for a period of time to exceed the normal work schedule and sometimes longer than 24 hours. Worker is subject to other conditions such as pollen, creosote and other substances that may cause allergic reaction.
