RED Rochester, a multi-utility generation plant and district energy supplier to one of the world's most comprehensive industrial parks, is seeking a skilled Electrical Engineer to join their team as the Electrical Systems Utility Engineer in Rochester, NY. If you have a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and at least 7 years of relevant experience OR at least 10 years of experience as an electrical engineer, and your PE license, RED Rochester wants to hear from you! Minimum qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience in manufacturing/industrial sites, power generation, power distribution, utility interconnects, and/or business development preferred.
  • 7 to 10 years' related experience in electrical engineering, utilities, construction and design of power plants, cogeneration, power distribution, and/or other multi-disciplinary, energy-intensive industrial processes.
  • New York State PE License is expected for this position. If you have an active PE license in another state, you must be willing to retest in NY.
Essential skills/competencies:
  • Project management experience in capital or capitalized maintenance projects.
  • Good communications skills, both verbal and written across the RED-Rochester technical support, operations and maintenance teams
  • Ability to deal with outside engineers, contractors and vendors.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including Excel and Teams.
  • Use of Bluebeam Revu, Navisworks, AutoDesk/AutoCAD and Maximo.
  • Familiarity with SKM Systems Analysis software for Power Systems and Arc Flash. Ability to self-perform modeling a plus.
  • Strong technical knowledge in the areas of Low (110V to 600V) and Medium (600V to 34.5KV) voltage systems, equipment and metering.
  • Ability to plan and see the “big picture”. Must be a results-driven, self-starter with the desire to bring creative solutions to a dynamic operating environment.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Dedication to highest levels of utility service reliability and customer service
  • Ability to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime and respond to off-hour call-ins for emergency support.
Essential duties/responsibilities:
  • Lead in the development and maintain a long-range strategic master plan for the operations, maintenance, hardening, and future expansion of the Eastman Business Park electrical distribution system to meet new customer loads and increasing electrification of RED's utility assets.
  • Function as the lead technical resource providing direction in the areas of medium voltage (600V to 34.5KV) distribution equipment, substations, transformers, switchgear, cable, motors and turbine generators.
  • Provide technical support in the area of low voltage (110V to 600V) distribution equipment, variable frequency drives, and motors.
  • Provide power systems analysis for load flow and voltage drop, short circuit studies, equipment protection, and coordination, and arc flash studies. Knowledgeable with SKM Power Tools for Windows. Provide power quality analysis as needed relating to harmonics and system disturbances.
  • Project Management and electrical engineer support for projects both RED originated and customer-driven. This includes oversight of contract project engineers and construction contractors.
  • Provide Engineering assistance for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the RED-Rochester low and medium voltage systems.
  • Coordinate NYISO generator modelling and other NYISO technical requests for market participation as a Behind the Meter Net Generator.
  • Interface with the local utility to coordinate operation of and changes to the utility interconnect.
  • Provide Electrical Engineering assistance to all RED operating departments pertaining to building systems. Systems to include HVAC, reliable power, general lighting & power, IT cabling, cameras/security, fire alarms, UPS, etc.
  • Provide technical guidance to RED's EHS group relating to electrical safety compliance with applicable NFPA standards.
