Position Summary:

The Department of Facilities & Administrative Services is a large operational service organization that provides a broad array of services to the campus community through the following offices: Automotive Services, Building Services, Energy & Central Utilities, Facilities Operations, Grounds & Landscape Maintenance Services, Mailing & Receiving Services, Occupational Safety and Environmental Services and Risk Management Services.

The College of New Jersey's Plumbing Shop is seeking experienced candidates to serve as an Electrician. Under the direction of the Electrical Shop Supervisor, the selected candidate will perform varied types of work involved in the installation, inspection, repair, servicing, and maintenance of electrical equipment, appliances, machinery, and circuits. The selected candidate should be knowledgeable in preventive maintenance of all types of electrical circuits, systems and equipment, including 480 volts and lower voltages.

Note: This position is deemed as essential , and the selected candidate will be required to report to work in the event of an inclement weather emergency.

Main Responsibilities:

* Inspects electrical systems and equipment to determine what preventive maintenance is needed.

* Performs preventive maintenance as necessaary and as scheduled. Replaces fixtures/parts, oils, greases, lubricates fixtures/parts, and cleans and adjusts components as necessary.

* Ensures that completed work provides building with a fully operational emergency back up system (e.g. lighting, generator, inverter, and fire alarms).

* Inspects, installs, maintains, repairs, and services power and light feeders, generating and control equipment, relays, transformers, motors, pumps, switches, outlets, signal systems and other electrical wiring cables, fixtures and appliances of varied types.

* Inspects electrical wiring, fixtures, appliances, motors, generators, pumps, power circuits, and controllers of machines and elevators.

* Makes emergency electrical repairs, troubleshoots malfunctions and breakdowns, inspects work in progress and completed work for defects, fire hazards, or other unsafe conditions.

* Prepares and/or works from schematics, sketches, plans and specifications with accuracy in the field. Reads said schematics, sketches, plans and specifications.

* Estimates, measures, inspects, repairs, and maintains various items using appropriate equipment, materials, tools, and procedures using approved trade practices, manufacturer's recommendations, and specific manufacturer's warranties.

* Uses various types of electrical testing equipment, such as ammeter, voltmeters, and ohmmeters.

* Responds to calls for emergency assistance and overtime, both emergency and scheduled, pursuant to departmental protocol.

* Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

* Experience: Three (3) years of experience in work involving the installation, inspection, repair, servicing and maintenance of electrical equipment, appliances, machinery, and circuits.

* License: Possession of a valid driver's license in good standing issued by the state of residence is required.

Substitution: Applicants who do not possess the required experience may substitute a current Electrical Contractor license issued by the New Jersey Department of Consumer Affairs for three (3) years of experience.

Provisional Note: This position is in the classified (career) service. Applicants selected from this recruitment will be appointed provisionally at this time. Applicants applying for this position must also apply for the New Jersey Civil Service Commission announcement at a later time and be reachable on the resulting eligible list for this location. Appointees who fail to be reachable on the resulting eligible list may be subject to separation from their provisional title. Upon/if becoming permanent in the position, is contingent upon the successful completion of a four-month probationary period.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Experience working from electrical sketches, schematics, plans and specifications in accordance with the electrical code or approved trade practices and established procedures.

* Ability to analyze the problems involved in the maintenance and repair of electrical circuits, systems and equipment, including 480 volts and lower voltages; and, have the ability to effectively communicate with supervisor, colleagues and clients.

* Demonstrated broad experience in commercial/industrial environment as an electrician in work involving the installation, inspection, repair, servicing and maintenance of electrical systems, circuits and related equipment.

* Final offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check and reference checks.

* Residency Requirement: In accordance with the New Jersey First Act P.L. 2011 c.70, effective September 1, 2011, new public employees in certain positions (faculty exempt) are required to obtain New Jersey residency within one (1) year of employment. Applicants must meet the requirements listed.
