Summary Electrician (OST) - This position is at Lock Operations. This position is a journey level position involving the electrical repair, installation, modification, maintenance, and testing of Lock machinery, equipment, and related items associated with lock structures and facilities.   • Makes electrical repairs by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, motors, outlets, grounds, transformers, heating and ventilation systems, controls, other equipment, and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, loose connections and fittings, damaged light fixtures, thermostats, and similar items.Primarily works on installed systems rearranging and hooking up outlets, switches, control switches, regulators, circuit breakers, and similar items.
  • Works with high voltages including 120 volts, 208 volts, and 480 volts. Electrician must wear proper personal protective equipment including a full 40 calorie suit.Required to lock out electrical equipment for other departments so that work can be performed safely on machinery.
  • Performs inspections and preventive maintenance of lock equipment. Monitors and troubleshoots lock equipment and other facilities for performance issues, determines corrective action, performs corrective maintenance and/or determines need for assistance from other employees.
  • As required, performs related tasks which include but are not limited to: handling lines and mooring cables from vessels approaching the guide walls prior to lockage; operating a pick-up truck, side by side four-wheel drive vehicle with plow attachment and electric lock vehicle (ELV); assisting ship's personnel in securing vessels to the outer guidewalls; assisting pilots on/off vessels; guide wall and facility inspections; preparing witness statements concerning incidents occurring during the incumbents tour of duty; reading and recording vessel drafts and registration numbers; and assisting in the training of new employees.
The ideal candidate for this position is someone with extensive journey level experience in the electrical trade. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Applicants who have previously been tested will not need to be retested. Reimbursement for costs associated with traveling to Massena, NY, for the test are not authorized.
  • PHYSICAL EXAM REQUIRED: This position has strenuous physical requirements. You will be required to successfully complete a physical exam and a functional capacity test, at the expense of the Saint Lawrence Seaway, before being placed in the position. You may be assigned to duties requiring the use of a respirator. You will be fit tested for a respirator upon entering the position. You will be required to be clean-shaven for the initial fit-testing, and for any future assignments requiring the wearing of the respirator.
  • PRE-EMPLOYMENT BACKGROUND CHECK: You will be subject to a pre-employment and post-employment background investigation process which includes a fingerprint check.
  • DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: You must also be able to obtain and maintain a driver's license.
  • REQUIRED TRAINING: You must successfully complete Linehandler training within 1 year.
