Position Type: Student Support Services/Guidance CounselorDate Posted: 11/13/2024Location: DistrictDate Available: TBDClosing Date: UNTIL FILLEDJob Title: Guidance Counselor (Elementary School) Job Purpose: To provide individual counseling and/or group guidance activities based on the assessed needs of students; consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other appropriate individuals regarding services and programs available to/for students; develop procedures for program evaluation; serve as a resource person; maintain counseling records; and assist in the identification of students with special needs.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Mississippi Educator Licensure with appropriate endorsement / 436
- Have met other qualifications and requirements as established by the school district.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
- Masters degree from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
- Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
Reports To: Building Principal Supervises: N/A Duties & Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance.
- Administers a needs assessment for students, faculty and parents each school year.
- Develops a guidance calendar based on the results of the needs assessment.
- Implements a guidance program.
- Evaluates the guidance program annually.
- Provides individual counseling.
- Provides group guidance and counseling activities based on the assessed needs of students.
- Screens and follows up on referrals from teachers and parents in a timely manner.
- Plans jointly with teachers' remediation for student problems that interfere with mastery of basic skills.
- Assists in individual and group testing programs.
- Assists in the interpretation of individual reports to students, parents and teachers.
- Interprets test scores to appropriate individuals.
- Assists students in making the transition from one level to another and from one school to another.
- Develops a list of community referrals & updates agency lists each year.
- Maintains knowledge of referral procedures and guidelines.
- Maintains a file of referral forms.
- Identifies students' needs and indicates the necessity of assistance from other sources.
- Completes referral forms.
- Follow up on students' progress.
- Provides consultation with agencies as appropriate.
- Conducts an orientation for new students.
- Holds individual parent conferences as necessary for welfare of child.
- Provides consultation with teachers on educational progress of students.
- Consults with parents.
- Compiles student progress reports when requested by parents.
- Arranges and conducts parent-teacher-counselor conferences.
- Provides follow up information on all conferences and referrals to involved staff.
- Provides resource materials to students, staff, and parents.
- Invites community leaders to school functions.
- Perform other job related tasks as assigned by the immediate supervisor or superintendent.
