Purpose Statement on Using the Environment

An emphasis on outdoor learning by using the environment with which we live and learn by utilizing both structured and unstructured outdoor learning spaces; we intend to be an expeditionary learning school where students work together on a specific project throughout the school year to achieve a common goal. HLCS will be a smaller community school with smaller class sizes which will lead to more individualized attention and care.

All members in the school community will strive to take responsibility in their learning, collaborate and build mutual trust so all individuals feel safe and confident to take responsible risks. Our school will intentionally foster a space of inclusivity for all members.

Position Overview

The classroom teacher is responsible for the successful school experience of every child in their classroom. From academics to social skills, the classroom teacher is responsible for developing each child in a holistic way. Additionally, the classroom teacher is responsible for creating a safe environment where every child feels cared for, supported, and able to thrive. A critical member of the professional culture, the classroom teacher is also responsible for being a positive contributor to the staff team.

Job Responsibilities

• Create daily lesson plans that are engaging, educational and exciting
• Deliver lesson plans in a way that catches the attention of the students and keeps them excited about learning
• Differentiate instruction for a variety of ability levels
• Create authentic assessments
• Implement positive behavior interventions
• Be willing and able to co-teach, co-assess, co-plan, and reflect with other staff members
• Reach school and grade level performance goals
• Watch closely for students who are struggling with their learning and help them find the resources and support they need
• Partner with families to support student learning and create positive school culture
• Support a trauma-informed approach to teaching and learning
• Offer experiential opportunities consistent with EL Education including service learning, authentic assessment, and character education
• Engage in professional learning with EL Education embedded into the school model and calendar
• Utilize the outdoor environment as a backdrop to learning

Required Qualifications

• A valid MN teaching license for grades K-6 (or the ability to obtain one)
• Prior classroom experience desired

Candidates with experience in EL Education, Outdoor Learning, Social Emotional Learning, Trauma-Informed Care, and Restorative Practices are strongly encouraged to apply.
