Job Description:
Summary/Objective The part-time Control Room Dispatcher is an operations positions with primary responsibilities for general safety and security services, monitoring and operating various means of security video monitoring systems, two-way radio transmissions, etc., to ensure that misuse, damage, or theft of BJCC property does not occur at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center, and related properties. The incumbent is expected to positively reflect conduct becoming a public-facing employee and act as a customer service agent for employees and guests. Essential Duties/Responsibilities Demonstrates understanding and full performance ability in each of the following:
  • An understanding of the full range of principles, terms, techniques, equipment, and procedures to execute dispatcher activities and function to promote public safety.
  • An ability to make independent decisions to initiate and carry out internal and external customer service security requests. Capable of working unsupervised after being instructed on tasks.
  • Strategically plans and make recommendations to management to ensure overall security and public safety for tenants and visitors.
  • The full performance ability to work closely with internal and external colleagues (police, security guards and etc.) to prevent criminal activity and assist victims of criminal activity.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, follow instructions and use good judgment in matters relating to public safety of internal and external customers.
  • Advanced proficiency to use a range of current and modern job-related equipment, computer hardware, software applications, and best practices associated with security and dispatching.
  • Work cooperatively with others and possesses flexibility to complete other tasks as assigned, including working in other locations throughout the BJCC.
  • Advanced ability to listen, speak, interact tactfully and persuasively, and establish and maintain relationships constructively and cooperatively with BJCC partners, tenants and the public.
  • Effectively communicates in writing, in person, by two-way radio, by telephone or by email with external and internal customers, representing the BJCC to customers, the public, government and other external sources.
  • Expected to speak professionally, clearly and concisely when assisting patrons.
  • Ability to independently write accurate, legible, grammatically correct incident reports.
  • Expertly analyze, retain and evaluate data or information to anticipate results to choose the best solution and solve problems
  • Effectively communicates to internal/external partners to extract necessary incident details and effectively deliver that information to the required responding parties.
  • Proficient knowledge of the BJCC venues and facility including corresponding streets and venue locations.
  • Expert ability to operate a multi-plex camera system (Avigilon and Genatex).
  • Provides security assistance to major events held across the facility with an emphasis on heavily populated areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Work EnvironmentThis position may have a moderate to extensive stress level associated with responding to emergency situations, dealing with the public, and prioritizing responses. The environment is mainly indoors, usually working in a communication center environment. Physical DemandsPosition requires calm and professional response in a crisis or stressful situation. Must have the ability to hear and communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing. Duties require extended periods of sitting. Limited amount of physical effort such as walking, standing, climbing, bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling. Ability to lift up to 30lbs with or without assistance, while maintaining good balance. Must be flexible enough to reach above shoulder level and be able to push and pull for brief periods of time. Ability to hear and clearly communicate verbally. Must have the visual acuity to see and monitor multiple cameras. Position Type/Expected Hours of WorkPart-time positions; hours of work must be flexible and varied to meet the demands of the events of the facility. Must be able to work extended and/or irregular hours including day, nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.Required Education and Experience
  • Minimum of one (1) year related knowledge, experience, and skills in related work, emergency dispatcher, security, law enforcement or military.
  • CPR certification or ability to become certified
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid State of Alabama Driver License preferred.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • Must possess superb verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly speak and write English
  • Ability to be supervised and work cooperatively with co-workers and provide good internal and external customer service
  • Must possess a training focus with a availability to attend a minimum of 10-12 hours of training annually.
  • Minimum of standard professional excellence
  • Ability to visually inspect and watch monitor control units for prolonged times
  • Ability to use good judgment, problem solve and think critically in all matters
  • Ability to follow established standard operating procedures and security dispatch protocols
  • Basic computer skills
