General Summary GTI Energy, the nation's leading research, development, and training organization serving energy markets, has an opportunity for an experienced Emerging Technologies Project Manager within GTI's Research & Engineering. The qualified candidate is expected to lead an emerging technology program for utility clients that involves technical and economic assessment of emerging technologies. The qualified candidate will support R&D functions in collaboration with technical staff, focused on energy efficient equipment for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), water heating, appliances, and building envelope technologies for residential, commercial and industrial buildings. The position will involve interacting and collaborating with researchers from utilities, private industries, government agencies, universities, and national laboratories. The candidate will also collaborate with senior technical staff and external partners in executing and managing field, laboratory, and analytical research projects. Why GTI Energy? Work Location The position will be based in the Chicagoland area at the GTI Energy Headquarters. We offer a hybrid/core work week, where employees are remote Mondays and Fridays, and required to be on-site Tuesday through Thursday. Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead an emerging technology program that seeks to identify, demonstrate, test, and introduce new energy efficient technologies to the market.
  • Lead technical review meetings with external partners by presenting project updates, new project proposals, budget and other programmatic updates.
  • Be a quick study with new emerging energy-related technologies. Develop in-depth technical understanding with an awareness of standards, economics and applicable markets.
  • Develop new project proposals with subject matter experts (SMEs) based on keen understanding of external client energy efficiency portfolio needs and industry trends.
  • Perform technical and economic assessments of emerging technologies to evaluate performance, resilience, economic, and environmental impacts.
  • Manage experimental and field demonstration R&D projects, including managing budgets, schedules, deliverables, and the project teams of internal and external staff and partners.
  • Mentor junior engineers on project specific topics, support the development of technical and administrative troubleshooting skills, and general professional development.
  • Analyze project specific KPIs through spreadsheet analysis and software tools.
  • Prepare technical documents, test reports, and research publications to fulfill project reporting needs as well as communicate technical information and place key results in context for customers, partners, and subcontractors.
  • Develops, manages, and fosters partnerships with clients, subcontractors, and other industry stakeholders.
  • Travel to participate in field site visits, pilot implementations, conferences and industry events.
  • Demonstrate that internal and external customers are a high priority; show willingness to go the extra mile.
  • Coordinate effectively with GTI Energy in-house contracting, purchasing, and accounting staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics Experience in any of the following areas is a strong plus: (a) energy efficiency program design, implementation, and evaluation, (b) advanced emerging technologies for improving performance and reducing emissions of fuel-fired and electrically-driven technologies, (c) experience developing research proposals for federal, state, commercial, and utility funded opportunities, (d) hands-on work in a laboratory environment and/or field measurement and verification (e) familiarity with codes and standards related to residential, commercial and industrial HVAC&R equipment, appliances, and water heaters as well as building envelope technologies, and (f) other areas relevant to developing future building technologies that are efficient and grid-interactive. Additional knowledge/skills needed for success include:
  • Familiarity with methods of measurement and verification such as data acquisition, instrumentation, and controls are a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a small team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Individuals who are self-motivated and able to work independently with direction.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with strong ability to state and solve problems, including defining project objectives and delivering results through identification and execution of varied tools to solve customer and project challenges.
  • Working knowledge of energy modeling tools.
Education and Experience
  • A Bachelor of Science in an engineering or scientific field; Relevant Industry Certifications are a plus (Licensed Professional Engineer, LEED AP, CEM, PMP, etc.)
  • A minimum of 10 years' relevant work experience (HVAC and energy systems are preferred) or an advanced degree in an engineering or scientific field with 7 years of experience.
  • Supervisory experience, particularly in a research or engineering-based setting is a plus
  • Experience identifying new technical and/or business areas of activity is a plus
  • Experience with project management (PMP certification) and multi-discipline collaborative experience preferred.
  • Active and recognized participant in professional societies is a plus
Pay Transparency The salary range for this position is $95,000 - $125,000 USD annually. This salary range is GTI Energy's good faith estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, GTI Energy's business or organizational needs and an individual's relevant experience, education, qualifications, certifications, skills, seniority, geographic location, and/or performance. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate, monthly rate, or annual salary only, and do not include bonus. The range listed is just one component of GTI Energy's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, paid time off, and region-specific benefits.
