What We DoAt the SEI AI Division, we conduct research in applied artificial intelligence and the engineering challenges related to the practical design and implementation of AI technologies and systems. We currently lead a community-wide movement to mature the discipline of AI Engineering for Defense and National Security.As our government customers adopt AI and machine learning to provide leap-ahead mission capabilities, we* Build real-world, mission-scale AI capabilities through solving practical engineering problems* Discover and define the processes, practices, and tools to support operationalizing AI for human-centered, robust, secure, and scalable mission capabilities* Prepare our customers to be ready for the unique challenges of adopting, deploying, using, and maintaining AI capabilities* Identify and investigate emerging AI and AI-adjacent technologies that are rapidly transforming the technology landscapeAre you creative, curious, and collaborative? Apply to join our team.Position Summary: As an Engineer on our team, you will apply the latest in software and advanced computing research and leading-edge technologies to important and challenging government problems and needs.Requirements:* Software and Hardware Engineering Process: You have experience with a variety of modern software and hardware engineering processes from across the entire lifecycle. You understand how and when to use them and how to tailor them for dynamic environments.* Systems Thinking: You can grasp the big picture of systems and domains, and you possess strong reasoning skills and the ability to balance complex sets of trade spaces.* Technical Pragmatism: While holding the big picture in mind, you can predict the realities of how the project will manifest technically and can make recommendations and decisions.* Technical Teamwork: You have experience participating on high-technology teams for a variety of projects, including open-source development projects.* Knowledge of Department of Defense and Intelligence Community: You are familiar with DoD or Intelligence Community software systems acquisition practices.Duties:* Build and demonstrate. You'll design and develop solutions that provide needed capabilities to the government, building on state-of-the-art research in high-performance computing and edge architectures, data analytics, information architectures, machine learning, artificial intelligence, software architectures, and human-machine interaction. You'll support software development infrastructure and assist in building and configuring computing systems and resources. You'll build and demonstrate interactive prototypes.* Test and evaluate. You'll conduct rapid prototyping to demonstrate and evaluate technologies in relevant environments. You'll evaluate systems for performance and security. You'll test software capabilities using novel testing and analysis techniques.* Collaborate. You'll actively participate on teams of developers, researchers, designers, and technical leads. You'll collaborate with researchers and our government customers to understand challenges, needs, and possible solutions. You'll contribute to improving the overall technical capabilities of the Division by mentoring and teaching others, participating in design (software and otherwise) sessions, and sharing insights and wisdom across the SEI.* Programming: You'll have the chance to work with modern software languages such as Python and C/C++, and hardware design languages including Verilog, VHDL, or other HLS languages.* Technical Experimentation. You'll experiment with emerging technologies such as computer vision and cognitive radio, evaluate novel software stacks, algorithms, and compilers, and explore the latest in advanced hardware, including FPGAs, CGRAs, TPUs, and neuromorphic processors.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:* Communication and Collaboration: You have strong written and verbal communication skills and can interact collaboratively and diplomatically with customers and colleagues. You grasp the big picture, direction, and goals of an effort while focusing great attention to detail. You can present complex ideas to people who may not have a deep understanding of the subject area.* Dedication: You can meet deadlines while multi-tasking-sometimes under pressure and with shifting priorities.* Creativity and Innovation: You are creative and curious, and you are inspired by the prospect of collaborating with premier researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and other universities and organizations. You quickly learn new procedures, techniques, and approaches.* Knowledge and Learning: You possess broad technical experience and interest in computer science and applied technology such as human-computer interaction, data analytics and machine learning, advanced computing, and autonomy and adaptive systems.* Technical Expertise: You'll have experience with modern software languages such as Python and C/C++, and hardware design languages, such as Verilog, VHDL, or other HLS languages. Experience in a machine learning environment is strongly preferred.Other Requirements:* BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline with eight (8) years of experience in hands-on software development; OR MS in the same fields with five (5) years of experience; OR PhD with two (2) years of experience* Flexible to travel to other SEI offices in Pittsburgh and Washington, DC, sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings on occasion. Moderate (25%) travel outside of your home location.* You will be subject to a background investigation and must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.* Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States.
