Job Description:
The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has an opening for an Engineering Intern in our Water & Steam Distribution Department, located in Lansing, MI.Position Summary:Job Type: Full-Time Summer InternshipDates: May 12, 2025 - August 08, 2025Pay Rate: $22.00 per hour.Responsible for supporting a variety of engineering duties involving the performance, design, construction, project management and maintenance of water, steam, and chilled water distribution systems. Work will be performed under the direction of the Water & Steam Distribution Principal Engineer and focused on meeting the Board of Water and Light's objectives and vision statement. The Water & Steam Engineering Intern will learn from and be supervised by a mentor of the Water & Steam Distribution Department.Essential Functions:
  • The Intern will assist with various projects within the department. Interns are assigned small, less complex projects and can be a part of a larger more complex project. As they learn and grow so does the size and complexity of projects.
  • Departmental collaboration on company-wide projects.
    • Water main
    • Service and meter design, including maintenance
    • Progress meetings and site visits for current construction projects
  • Writes documents and reports and provides updates at staff meeting.
  • Assists with the development of work instructions and procedures to support critical subsystem operations and maintenance.
  • Utilizes standard office software (i.e., spreadsheet, word-processing, database) and SAP.
  • Required to follow BWL Safety Manual and wear personal protective equipment for all field work.
  • Attends training and safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required by the BWL or government agency such as MIOSHA.
  • Participation in the continuous improvement of the Asset Management System and Work Management processes.
  • Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Job Specifications:
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution in an engineering program (e.g., chemical, mechanical, industrial, reliability, electrical) with junior or senior status during the summer of 2025.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:The physical demands described here represent those that an employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office environment, including the use of stairs. Constantly operates a computer and other office equipment. Ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen. Must frequently communicate with other departments and employees both verbally and in writing. May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and/or position the body to reach items on the floor/below knee level or reach overhead. The person in this position needs to move about in industrial environments and on uneven terrain occasionally. May be required to recognize small numbers, letters, symbols, color on prints, and operate field instruments/equipment. Works in a temperature-controlled office environment, with occasional work in outdoor weather conditions and industrial environments.
