ENGINEERING ASSISTANT
PAY GRADE: 124 - $ 61,373.00 minimum salary
Purpose of Classification
Performs engineering work. Work involves design, construction management, construction inspection, development review, surveying, environmental, and transportation related activities. Design activity is supervised by a licensed professional engineer who has authority for final approval of all projects. Work requires some contact with local governmental representatives, engineering contractors and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of detail.
Essential Functions
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams and completion/maintenance of required documentation.
Assists in performing construction inspections, research and problem solving of engineering-related problems, creating plans, specifications and estimates (PS&E).
Drives to assist during emergencies and inclement weather.
Performs engineering-related duties in the field of transportation engineering. Applies engineering principles, methods and techniques to a wide variety of transportation-related activities, such as engineering-related calculations and drafting/design work.
Performs engineering-related planning, design, data collection, evaluation and analysis activities.
Uses automated roadway/structural or hydraulic design programs and computer-assisted design/engineering systems
Provides assistance and information to employees, managers, vendors, citizens, local businesses, and/or and other interested parties regarding assigned development functions; serves as liaison between supervisors, vendors, and other departments in regards to department policies and activities. Explains policies and procedures.
Prepares various department documents requiring knowledge of department policies, programs, and procedures and which may involve researching, compiling, analyzing, retrieving and/or summarizing data.

Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field, accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET). Engineering in Training Certification required or able to obtain within the six (6) month probationary period. Must have a valid Texas Driver's License.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert medium physical effort in medium work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of medium weight (20-30 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion at a keyboard or work station.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Exposure to damp/wet surfaces, duty conditions, fumes and odors, flammable liquids and high noise levels.
This is not a Civil Service covered position.
