There are two Engineering Assistants reporting directly to the Engineering Office Supervisor. Secondary supervisor is the Assistant City Engineer. Major Duties
Manages data collected from various civil engineering, energy and other municipal projects and City complaint system by updating sewer/water records, drawings and maps in the City's enterprise system, the road asset management program for compliance with State of Michigan mandates, completing as-built information through interpreting surveyor and/or engineer notes from construction. Also maintains PASER rating data and sidewalk repair data.Participates in engineering office operations through reviewing submittals for construction projects; provides measurements to contractors, utility companies and residents; processes the Engineering Division permits to include maintaining and balancing a cash drawer; and provides assistance and/or finalizes division correspondence.Participates in Engineering field operations through field inspections, site visits, collecting PASER rating data, monitoring water and sewer utility work within the right of way and investigating any code enforcement sidewalk complaints. Reviews utility company applications, references city utility information for conflicts, and makes recommendations on behalf of the City Engineer.Relays requirements for road patches to all entities performing road patches with the Right of Way (ROW).Serves as construction inspector for sidewalk projects and other small miscellaneous projects through maintaining daily reports, monitoring the contractor work and making field decisions under the direction of the project engineer, ensuring that work meets contract specifications through concrete material testing and mathematical calculations/solutions.Participates in various phases of design for municipal projects by conducting research, reviews and drafting proposals. Also participates by communicating goals to consultants and participates in project meetings.Performs site plan reviews. Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned, including but not limited to:- Inspects road and water main projects when an Engineering Technician is not available
- Ensures quality control of construction materials and contract work
- Assists in grant writing for construction projects as necessary or requested
- Maintains subdivision maps and writes city property agreements and easements
- Writes land/property boundary descriptions for parcels of property and street changes
- Responsible for cleaning and maintaining the concrete lab and concrete testing equipment

Associate degree in Engineering or Construction Management or similar field of study, or equivalent work experience.One-year experience in Civil Engineering operations preferred.Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite in particular MS Word and Excel. Proficient in Computer Aided Design/Drafting, Autodesk products such as Civil 3D, MAP, and AutoCAD, ESRI and/or GIS Software preferred.Experience with MDOT computer programs and record keeping system preferred: Michigan Engineers Resource Library (MERL); Roadsoft/GIS; FieldManagerMDOT Concrete Technician certification or ability to obtain within 12 months from placement into position. This is a required certification of this position.MDOT FieldManager Office Technician certification or ability to obtain within 12 months from placement into position.
