Mechanical Engineering ManagerOur client is a major privately owned Power company and a primary energy producer for the state of Georgia with a goal of providing reliable and affordable services across a diverse power generation portfolio.Location: Atlanta, GASummary: The Mechanical Group Engineering Manager leads a team of engineers responsible for providing technical support, project management, and consultation as Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) for power generation facilities. In addition to managing direct reports, this role also provides technical direction to over 75 engineers, project managers, and technicians across Plant Operations, Capital Projects, and Technical Services, positioning the team to support planned facility expansions.Key responsibilities include mentoring and supervising the Mechanical Group, fostering communication between Technical Services, Capital Projects, and Plant Operations teams across headquarters and facilities. The Mechanical Group focuses on delivering day-to-day engineering and technical support, managing maintenance, repairs, replacements, and upgrades to mechanical systems and rotating equipment in power plants. The team also leads special projects aimed at enhancing plant performance, availability, and reliability.The Mechanical Group Engineering manager and their team will provide SME consultation on project development, construction, startup, and commissioning. The Engineering Manager plays a critical role in ensuring safe work practices, hazard identification, and regulatory compliance at federal, state, and local levels.Additionally, the Engineering Manager ensures appropriate site coverage and support across all power generation facilities and may occasionally be required to provide onsite support when needed or requested.Job Duties
  • Provide mentoring, leadership, and supervision to the Mechanical Group and serve to facilitate timely communication and resource coordination between Plant Operation, Capital Projects, and Technical Services at headquarters and each power generation facility.
  • Promote innovation with the Mechanical Group's engineered solutions, development of their engineering and technical skills, and encourage continuous improvement of their work processes and practices
  • Develop, implement, and revise the mechanical maintenance practices, processes and procedures for power plant mechanical systems and rotating equipment supporting each plant's Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and workflows.
  • Lead and manage the insulated and high energy piping program with engineering resources to support and ensure compliance with applicable standards.
  • Manage the development and implementation of engineered mechanical solutions for power plant systems and equipment for modification, and upgrades.
  • Utilize problem definitions, alternatives analysis, project scoping, cost estimating, and business cases for project justification, development, and implementation.
  • Serve as an SME on mechanical power generation systems and equipment for the development of technical specification with the purchase of equipment and support services.
  • Establish and implement for the Mechanical Engineering Group short- and long-term goals, objectives, policies and procedures, monitor and evaluate effectiveness, initiate improvement as necessary. Maintain knowledge and understanding of policies and procedures.
  • Provide services, such as the review of drawings, specifications, design memoranda, etc., to generation projects in development or under construction.
  • Perform various ad hoc studies, analysis, research special topics and issues, and develop communications products such as PowerPoint presentations, white papers or briefing materials as necessary.
Job RequirementsEducation
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology (preferably BSME, BSCE, BSChemE or equivalent) - Technical and business knowledge of generating plant operation, performance and economics.
Experience
  • Ten plus (10+) years engineering and five years minimum preventive and predictive maintenance experience in an operating commercial electric power generating plant is required, including planning, budgeting, preventive and predictive maintenance, and maintenance analysis. 5 years minimum experience with performance management, including supervision of direct reports.
Equivalent Experience
  • Fifteen plus (15+) in the power generation industry, oil, gas and petrochemical aircraft maintenance, military or merchant marine service related to the operation and maintenance of power generation equipment or similar propulsion equipment. Five (5) years minimum experience with performance management, including supervision of direct reports. First line supervision and leadership with craft labor, A&P mechanics or field technicians related to rotating equipment/prime movers.
Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred and valid driver's license that meets the insurance requirements under Drivers Qualification Program.
Specialized Skills (i.e., computers, software, tools and equipment uses)
  • Creativity; ability to organize and manage time well and to work with autonomy; good interpersonal skills; strong oral and written communication abilities; good technical and business analytical skills; PC fluency. Ability to work directly with Plant Manager and senior plant staff.
  • Familiarity and/or Expertise with design, operation, and maintenance of steam turbines, gas turbines, HRSGs, large centrifugal/positive displacement pumps, balance of plant (BOP) systems and equipment, cooling towers, air cooled condensers, auxiliary systems, and insulated high energy piping.
