Job Description:

JOB TITLE: Project Development Engineer (Engineering Project Manager)

LOCATION: Hybrid; Denver, CO

ANTICIPATED COMPENSATION: $100,000 - $130,000 (plus bonuses)

Millig Design Build is seeking a Project Development Engineer (PDE) to lead the analysis and development of decarbonization, HVAC renovation, and facility improvement projects from the earliest planning phases through design and pre-construction. Our PDE's become the trusted technical advisor for our clients and work collaboratively with Millig's internal team to identify and convert energy systems-related projects from conceptual designs to successful construction projects.

This candidate will also have the opportunity to train under some of the best engineers in the country to become an expert in designing systems to eliminate fossil fuels as a heating energy source and create high-performing district energy systems at universities, industrial pharmaceutical manufacturing plants, and state capitol campuses. Some travel is required.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Produce Requests for Information and hold initial meetings with owners and Millig's business development team.
  • Perform on-site facility and campus assessments to evaluate building and central utility system conditions and operations.
  • Work with senior engineering leadership to identify facility and system deficiencies and opportunities for improvement.
  • Create baseline energy models using eQUEST, spreadsheets, and similar.
  • Perform carbon assessment and carbon end use analysis, with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Develop a variety of upgrade options and assess the feasibility of each option through cost estimating, constructability review, and life cycle cost analysis.
  • Perform iterative analysis of different upgrade options targeting energy efficiency, infrastructure improvements, electrification, decarbonization or other goals of our owners.
  • Identify qualitative attributes of each project depending on each owner's goals and needs.
  • Develop deliverables such as facilities assessments, decarbonization plans, Master Plans, Investment Grade Audits, RFP responses, and construction proposals.
  • Manage Millig's internal resources to meet project timelines and budgets.
  • Transition projects to the Construction Manager for project implementation.

Responsible for Supporting and Assisting with:

  • Develop and deliver sales presentations in close collaboration with Millig's business development staff.
  • Work closely with design engineers to produce accurate and thorough construction drawing sets.
  • Remaining engaged with the project throughout construction by reviewing submittals, furnishing responses to RFIs, and solving ongoing engineering and controls system issues.
  • Provide mentorship and training to junior engineers.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineer or similar.
  • Professional Engineer license or Engineer in Training working towards a PE.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in related field.
  • Experience with the project development process from conceptual ideas through full construction drawings.
  • Experience developing renovation and energy retrofit projects in existing facilities, particularly HVAC and controls systems.
  • Experience with building energy simulation programs, like eQUEST.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and develop creative solutions to a variety of complex issues encountered in the field.
  • Demonstrated ability to project manage to drive timelines and deliverables.
  • Ability to pass a background check for work in secure facilities such as jails and schools.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • 5 or more years of experience as a mechanical and energy engineer.
  • A strategic mind geared towards development of solutions that differentiate us from our competitors.
  • Familiarity with the construction process or willingness to learn.
  • Experience developing and cultivating relationships with clients.
