Why does the job exist?Position will work in the capacity of lead inspector on roadway, bridge, and maintenance construction projects. Position will perform independent field inspections, perform highway construction and provide instruction and direction to other Inspectors in the inspection, testing, and documentation of construction projects, quality assurance of material and/or conduct field materials sampling and testing as needed to provide a safe, quality and cost-effective transportation system in accordance with policies, procedures, and specifications. How does it get done?Being lead inspector on construction projects, testing of materials, highway construction, documentation, working closely with contractors. Who are the customers?The traveling public and pedestrians. Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate will have experience in the following: - Knowledge of roadway construction projects, - Specifications of projects, and - Lead/train other employees. Substitution TableThese combinations of education and experience qualify you for the position: Education Experience 1 High School Diploma or Equivalent AND 4 years of experience 2 Associate's degree AND 2 years of experience 3 Bachelor's degree or higher AND 0 years of experience •Education and years of experience must be related to the purpose of the position. •If Minimum Qualification requires a specific number of semester hours in a field (e.g. 6 semester hours in Accounting), applicants MUST have those semester hours in order to meet the minimum qualifications. No substitutions apply for semester hours.Employment RequirementsMust possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Business reference check and Driver's License verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results. Will require Technician Training and Certification Program (TTCP) certificates within one year of hire to include but not limited to: Nuclear Densometer, Concrete Field and Lab Testing, Aggregate, Soils, Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), Inertial Profiler Inspector, Drilled Shaft Inspector and Seeding Inspector. Will require ACNM training certificate within one year of hire to include but not limited to: Storm Water Competent Person and Traffic Control Technician and Supervisor. Working ConditionsWork is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions: hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow. Exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; exposure to temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations; high speed/high volume traffic and loud noises; subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances for litter control; hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call out for weather, accidents and/or emergencies on short notice; frequent temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays to include weekends, holidays, and overtime are required.
