We're working with a custom food manufacturer to find an experienced EHS Manager for a facility in Northern Illinois .
This key role will lead compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other regulations while advancing safety, sustainability, and the management of ammonia, CO₂, and nitrogen systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Environmental:
- Develop and implement environmental policies and programs to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., EPA, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act).
- Manage waste disposal, recycling, and hazardous materials programs to ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal.
- Oversee air, water, and waste permits, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements.
- Conduct environmental audits and risk assessments to identify areas for improvement.
- Coordinate spill response and emergency preparedness plans, ensuring alignment with environmental regulations.
- Track and report environmental performance metrics, including energy usage, water consumption, and waste generation.
- Drive sustainability initiatives, such as energy efficiency, waste reduction, and pollution prevention programs.
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to minimize environmental impact during operations.
Health and Safety:
- Develop, implement, and oversee health and safety programs to ensure compliance with OSHA and other workplace safety standards.
- Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify and mitigate hazards.
- Lead incident and injury investigations, determining root causes and implementing corrective actions.
- Deliver comprehensive safety training programs for employees, including new hire orientation and ongoing education.
- Maintain all required safety documentation, such as OSHA logs, training records, and inspection reports.
- Monitor and report safety performance metrics, recommending improvements to leadership.
- Act as the lead contact during emergencies, managing emergency response and crisis management plans.
- Collaborate with department managers to integrate health and safety considerations into workflows.
Refrigeration Systems:
- Manage and oversee the safety aspects of ammonia, CO₂, and nitrogen systems used in production and refrigeration processes.
- Conduct inspections, risk assessments, and maintenance checks to ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards.
- Train staff on the proper handling and safety protocols for working with ammonia, CO₂, and nitrogen systems.
- Respond to and resolve any issues related to refrigeration systems, ensuring operational safety and minimal disruption.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Proven experience in environmental, health, and safety management, preferably in a manufacturing or food production environment.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and other relevant environmental and safety regulations.
- Hands-on experience or strong knowledge of ammonia, CO₂, and nitrogen systems.
- Ability to manage environmental reporting and compliance requirements.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to engage employees and promote a culture of safety and sustainability.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and generate actionable insights.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field (Preferred).
- Certifications such as CSP, CIH, or CHMM are highly desirable.
- Experience in managing environmental permitting and reporting requirements.
