An Environmental and Science Communication postdoctoral fellow position is available in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, under the direction of Dr. Jessica Eise. This is a school-funded position for two years. The position includes benefits and compensation congruent with NIH stipend levels. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis, but applications received by 31 January 2025 will be given full consideration, and the search will remain open until suitable candidate is found. The anticipated start date is 1 September 2025.

The postdoctoral fellow will join Dr. Eise in Bloomington, Indiana, to work on a unique set of projects combining social scientific research and applied research to study how humans and society interrelate with the environment and how we can improve climate change adaptation and mitigation. Examples of projects the fellow may work on include:

1. How indigenous or marginalized agricultural communities communicate their experiences with climate change and the socio-economic factors that constrain or enable adaptation + building a tailored solution

2. How spiritual, moral and/or ethical frames influence willingness to take action on climate change in the general population + generating outreach on findings

3. The socio-cultural factors affecting adaptation of an infant cooling system to decrease infant mortality under climate change + promoting its use in different cultural contexts

4. How film messages influence mental models of climate change + managing an international film festival

The primary goal of these projects is to understand human and societal responses to and impacts of environmental challenges, and to craft solutions that can be immediately applied to identified challenges. The ultimate goal of the work is to improve human and environmental wellbeing.

The postdoctoral fellow position requires a PhD in communication, anthropology, sociology, environmental science, environmental health or a related scientific or social scientific field by the time of appointment. The successful applicant will be expected to lead studies and design and execute solutions under Dr. Eise, as well as generate new knowledge that is congruent with the overall goals of the projects. It is imperative that the candidate be a proficient writer and project manager who is able to spearhead projects, data analysis and publications and write efficiently. Organizing data collections, outreach projects, analyzing data and generating peer-reviewed publications are essential primary responsibilities. Resources are available for travel to scientific meetings, and formal training is available with regards to grant writing, research ethics, rigor and reproducibility, and research management. There will also be opportunities to develop independent research interests, write independent research proposals and to gain expertise in science communication, environmental communication, health communication, social scientific research and applied research.
