Job Location: FairfieldWant to make an impact?The Environmental, Health and Safety Specialist (EHS) is responsible for maintaining the health and safety of the plant workforce and environment by monitoring and evaluating health and safety conditions; assuring compliance with applicable policies and governmental standards; and maintenance of the EHS programs, policies, and procedures for the site. The primary objective is to ensure a zero harm and injury free working environment including methodologies, initiatives, and strategies that promote safe operations, safety awareness, training, and continuous improvement to eliminate unsafe behaviors, conditions, and hazards in the workplace. The EHS Specialist supports the strategic vision of a zero harm and an injury free workplace by working with cross-functional teams both internally and externally.Ways you will make a differenceIn addition to the overall input to site Environmental, Health and Safety initiatives, strategies, programs and procedures, additional responsibilities include: • Deliver EHS programs to train employees in work site safety practices by promoting and leading a site culture where safety is ingrained as a core value with all employees • Drives effective and sustainable implementation of corporate and site EHS initiatives, strategies, programs, procedures, responsibilities via firsthand leadership, coaching, and teamwork • Facilitate, train, and coach new and current employees from onboarding to Cal/OSHA required annual training and other safety related topics to ensure compliance with government mandated training • Collaborates with employees to identify and implement solutions to safety issues identified in inspections and investigations to eliminate incidens and prevent recurrence • Effectively coaches and develops supervisors to be effective EHS leaders • Reviews incident and injury reporting and analyzes data to identify trends • Compliance with regulations and company policies by routinely interacting with employees on the plant floor • Analyzes EHS programs, conditions, and behaviors and recommends changes to continuously improve site EHS performance • Provides key support to all environment policies and procedures • Leads and ensures thorough RCA investigation of all incidents in coordination with site leadership • fosters and develops a culture where everyone is actively engaged in performing their work in as safe a manner as possible and where co-workers hold each other accountable to prevent at-risk behaviors • Oversee regulatory compliance audits and inspections associated with record keeping • In partnership with HR, oversees worker's compensation claims by working with insurance company, injured employee, and clinics from the opening of the claim until closure • Maintains OSHA log and all other require data entry • Provides EHS functional and technical expertise/coaching as needed in all areas and initiatives • Collaborates with other key functions on initiatives, including: Engineering, HR, Quality, Operations, to deliver on goals and plans • Examines tasks and determines the best method of accomplishing work to prevent injury • Oversees incident investigation and preparation of CAPA reports for prevention of recurring incidents across multiple manufacturing sites • Lead and maintain Behavior Based Safety (BBS) observations for the site and encourage engagement in reporting BBS observations across all levels of the organization • Occasional travel to support other sites as neededSkills that will make you successful
  • Ability to build teams throughout all levels and functions of the site with respect, tact and win-win outcomes
  • Extensive working knowledge of Cal/OSHA and regulatory compliance inspection procedures
  • Excellent decision-making skills, capable of making well-informed decisions in both routine and emergency situations
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required
  • Strong presentation skills with ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization and audiences with broad range of backgrounds and understanding
  • Thorough knowledge of basic industrial hygiene and occupational health hazards and regulations
  • High diligence is needed to maintain awareness of existing and proposed safety codes/regulations and company guidelines plus maintain and analyze appropriate data
  • Proactive problem-solving skills as well as ability to make decisions in time-sensitive conditions
  • Understanding of fire codes, standards, and regulations
  • Awareness of applicable environmental policies, standards, guidelines, regulations, and local requirements (spill containment, facility waste stream & disposal requirements, etc.)
  • Ability to develop programs to reduce worker's compensation costs, recordable injury, and lost time injury rates
  • Demonstrated ability to develop mutual solutions to challenges through collaboration
  • Apply ergonomic principles and recommend improvements with engineering or administrative controls
  • Understand biomechanics and human interaction/impact with machinery and workstations
  • Strong initiative skills to lead continuous improvement projects
Experiences that will support your success
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Occupational Safety, Environmental Sciences or related field, or a combination of education and experience related to the position
  • Demonstrated experience working in a safety and environmentally conscious manufacturing environment (confectionary experience preferred)
  • 1-3 years of experience successfully coordinating EHS activities in a manufacturing setting
  • Experience guiding site-based safety teams and effectively lead safety committees to engage site personnel
  • OSHA 30-hour card
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED certification
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience with Maximo preferred
  • Experience with SAP preferred
  • Forklift experience
