Environmental Science Lab Instructor Support Specialist
Job Summary:
Reporting to the Chairs of the Environmental Science Department, and working directly with faculty the Environmental Science Lab Instructor Support Specialist supports a range of lab- and field-based activities in the department including: analyzing corals and foraminifera, conducting social and ecological field surveys, and managing laboratories, maintaining analytical instruments, preparing for and participating in field trips and assisting with departmental outreach. This position requires occasional nights and weekends along with the need to work at the Barnard and Columbia Morningside Campus, Columbia's Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, and other locations as needed.
Job Description:
* Work with students and faculty members assisting them in their research as detailed below.
* Work with faculty members assisting them in their classes, especially lab, field, and hands-on classes.
* Run, maintain and provide technical assistance for scientific equipment in the department and as needed at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. This equipment includes, but is not limited to ion chromatograph, ICPs, GC's, Millipore water system, balances, pipettes, ovens, incubators, field equipment etc.
* Prepare equipment and materials; supervise chemical database; arrange for the proper waste disposal of both chemical and biological waste.
* Participate in safety committee meetings and obtain the standard basic safety training for both the College and the city required in the department. Responsible for staying current with safety procedures and policies.
* Work with faculty on special course-related activities and departmental activities.
* Performs additional duties and responsibilities as needed.
Salary: $65,000 - $70,000 annually

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
* Strong laboratory skills
* Strong analytical skills.
* Excellent computer skills including MS Office, Google apps, R and/or Python, QGIS and/or ArcGIS, social media and basic publishing skills
* Experience with microscopes, analysis of metals, and/or stable isotopes.
* Strong science communication skills to support dissemination of scientific findings via data visualization, annual reports, and publications on a variety of scientific topics
* Strong organizational skills. Takes initiative, able to establish priorities and work independently and as part of a team
* Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication
* Must be able to interact effectively with faculty, staff, students, alumnae, vendors, and others
* Ability to work under pressure and balance competing responsibilities
* Willingness to work occasionally during evenings and weekends
* Ability to work in multiple locations
Qualifications:
* BA/BS degree in environmental or other related sciences
* Science laboratory experience, and field experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience in conducting independent Research
* PhD in Environmental or other related sciences
* Experience in any of the following fields of study: paleoclimate, geochemistry, interdisciplinary urban ecology, climate resilience, environmental justice
Physical Requirements:
* Must be able to do field and lab work.
