Salary: $23.64 - $28.97 Hourly Location : Kalamazoo, MI Job Type: Full-time Job Number: 24-00112 Department: Public Services Harrison Division: Public Services-Environmental Services Opening Date: 10/03/2024 Closing Date: 10/15/2024 11:59 PM Eastern Description/Distinguishing Features Under general supervision an Environmental Services Technician I performs routine work of moderate difficulty coordinating and performing water, wastewater, industrial discharger, groundwater sampling, and flow monitoring; performs basic chemical analysis in the field and the laboratory; maintains sample, analytical and field records; assists in responding to spills into and overflows from the sanitary or storm sewer; performs related duties as required. Weekend and holiday work is required for this position. Overtime work will be required for this position. This is a specialized technical position involving responsibility for water, wastewater, industrial discharger and groundwater sampling and flow monitoring programs to include sample collection, analysis, and record keeping; will perform field work and laboratory duties; prepares and maintains laboratory as well as sampling and flow monitoring equipment. Examples of Duties
  • Performs sampling, analysis and record keeping associated with water, wastewater, industrial and groundwater sampling and flow monitoring programs.
  • Prepares and labels sampling containers and equipment.
  • Prepares and installs sampling and flow monitoring equipment.
  • Maintains detailed files on customers, pollutants and equipment.
  • Assists in responding to complaints or spills to the sanitary or storm sewer.
  • Keeps records of sampling and flow monitoring data.
  • Performs housekeeping activities, including glassware for the public services laboratories, vehicles, sample equipment, flow monitoring equipment and metering stations.
Essential Qualifications
  • Significant knowledge of general chemistry and experience in related laboratory and sampling principles, practices and equipment.
  • Some knowledge of water, wastewater, industrial and groundwater operations.
  • Good skill in maintaining accurate records and in preparing technical reports.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform field work without assistance.
  • Ability to work with others including the general public in challenging situations.
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds with assistance to install and remove sampling and flow monitoring equipment.
  • Skill in reading blueprints.
  • Some skill in computer usage.
  • Working knowledge of organizing activities.
  • Professional skills in basic small machine operation and maintenance.
  • Some skill in the proper use of hand tools.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 40 pounds up and down flights of stairs, in the field, or in other areas as needed; considerable lifting and carrying involved.
  • Must be able to perform confined space entry and work in the roadway.
In house test required.Acceptable Training and Experience
  • Graduation from high school with courses in math and science, including chemistry and chemical safety.
  • Two years of experience performing environmental sampling.
  • Some basic college course work in the physical sciences, chemistry, engineering, as well as field and laboratory experience is preferred and/or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the essential knowledge, skills and abilities.
