Your Specific Responsibilities:
Professional environmental public health work, under general supervision of an Environmental Supervisor, conducting basic application/project reviews, site inspections or surveys, reviewing/preparing reports, correspondence, legal notices, sample collection, data entry and analysis or other comparable environmental public health work. Investigate reported communicable diseases of environmental origin. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, or a physical or biological science.
Uses knowledge of quality improvement (QI) methods and processes to work with other staff to help identify opportunities for improvement and develop a culture of quality within DOH-Indian River; assists in improvement projects, as assigned. Performs site inspections of regulated facilities such as food service establishments, group care establishments, schools, public swimming pools and bathing beaches, migrant labor housing and field, mobile home parks, body piercing, tattooing, biomedical waste generators, and tanning salons to ensure compliance with applicable regulations. Serves as Program Peer Reviewer for all applicable programs designated as team lead.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Excellent working knowledge of principles and objectives of environmental public health programs
* Excellent working knowledge of environmental public health regulations
* Excellent working knowledge of biological, bacteriological, and chemical functions and the ability to explain need for compliance with environmental public health regulations
* Excellent working knowledge of communicable diseases and understanding of epidemiological investigations
* Ability to establish effective positive working relationships with all customers
* Ability to read plats, maps, blueprints and to follow directions
* Ability to train and advise other environmental public health personnel
* Ability to work outside in extreme weather conditions
* Ability to work in and around water
* Ability to instruct the public at all levels in a tactful and courteous manner
* Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
* Ability to use personal computers and various software programs
* Ability to drive a motor vehicle, valid Florida Operator's license
* Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments
* Ability to use good judgement when problem solving
* Ability to work independently
* Ability to make educational and informational presentations
Qualifications:
Minimum
* A current State of FL employee
* Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, or a physical or biological science
* Valid Florida Driver's License
* Willing to work emergency duty in a special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural
Preferred
* Certified Environmental Health Professional in Food Hygiene, Chapter 381, Florida Statutes or Registered Sanitarian with Florida Environmental Health Association or National Environmental Health Association.
