The Work You Will Do:

This full-time salaried Environmental Specialist III position, with benefits, is part of the Florida Geological Survey's Geologic Investigations (GI) section. The position is involved with the FGS's STATEMAP program and funded through the U.S. Geological Survey. The position's primary duties are to collect and interpret geologic data to aid in the construction of geologic maps, cross-sections, and other geologic products that facilitate the completion of various projects and publications. You will conduct field investigations that may include core drilling, outcrop sampling, geophysical data collection/interpretation, and any other methods necessary to further the understanding of Florida's geologic history.

Pay:

The salary for this position is $52,530.00.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

In carrying out the duties of this position, the incumbent is expected to be aware of and abide by the Department's standards of conduct, as well as any and all departmental and/or work unit rules, directives, policies, procedures, and/or general orders applicable to performing the duties of this position.

* Must be familiar with techniques for describing the lithology of Florida's geologic formations and will be required to learn the lithostratigraphic units recognized in Florida.

* Must be willing and able to conduct geologic field work throughout the State of Florida and must be familiar with field sampling and field data collection techniques.

* Must be proficient with basic computer software including Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office products.

* Must be willing and able to learn database management and be able to input geologic data into FGS' GEODES database.

* Must be willing to learn how to use GIS software.

* Must be able to communicate efficiently with members of the public regarding various aspects of the geology of Florida.

* Other duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of or ability to learn the stratigraphy of Florida and how to identify geologic formations.

Knowledge of the techniques used for describing the lithology, paleontology, and mineralogy of rocks and sediment.

Knowledge and experience in geologic field mapping.

Knowledge of the procedures, equipment and materials used in laboratory testing and analysis of geologic materials.

Knowledge of the methods and techniques of scientific geophysical/geological investigations and field sample and data collection.

Skilled in use of personal computers, scientific calculators, scientific reference sources and computer programs necessary to produce reports, geologic maps, cross-sections and other graphical representations of geologic data.

Skilled in analyzing and solving geologic problems

Ability or willingness to learn to work on drill rigs as needed for geologic data collection.

Ability to produce quality written reports and scientific publications as the result of conducting geologic research and mapping.

Ability to collect, record, and analyze/interpret scientific data relating to the science of geology, and geophysical/seismic data collection.

Ability to apply the scientific method to geologic problems.

Ability to communicate effectively and courteously, both orally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and coordinate personnel and work assignments.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to travel and work more than 40 hours per week as required, including work asymmetric schedule (8/6).

Ability to plan and participate in fieldwork as needed for research projects.

Ability to maintain a valid Class E driver license.

Required Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree in geology from an accredited college or university; or any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described in this posting, for a total of four years.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Bachelor of Science degree is preferred. Prior and relevant work experience is preferred.

Other Job-Related Requirements for this position:

Must have a valid driver's license.
