Job Description:
An employee in this class performs technical work in collecting data and analyzing information about a wide range of concerns affecting the quality of the environment. The incumbent monitors diverse forms of pollution and assesses environmental resources in the jurisdiction. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed by a technical supervisor through direct observation, reports and conferences. *Does related work as required.ESSENTIAL SKILLS:Under the direction of the Senior Environmental Analyst the Engineering Technician will assist in:
  • Implementing the Suffolk County Parks Endangered Species Protection Program for the protection of the Piping Plover and Least Tern.
  • Preparation of NYSDEC permit applications (freshwater wetlands, tidal wetlands, Wild Scenic and Recreational Rivers, Protection of Waters, L I Well, SPDES permits) for various environmental projects and activities on County parkland.
  • Conducting Southern Pine Beetle ground truthing, surveying, meetings and collaboration with the NYSDEC, CPBC and other municipalities to suppress the spread of this tree killing beetle in County Parks.
  • Reviewing research proposals submitted by environmental agencies, professors, students and other scientists to conduct research activities on County parklands. Suggest modifications to proposals if necessary to make acceptable to department and draft the permit.
  • Compiling grant applications to secure funding for various County Parks projects or to address issues on County Parkland.
  • Working with the CPBC on prescribed fire and other land and management techniques to improve public safety and the ecological integrity of County Parklands.
  • Submitting monthly Long Island Pumpage reports and preparing responses to NYSDEC correspondence.
  • Working with Long Island Plant Management group dedicated to preventing the spread of invasive plant species, allowing Parks to be more proactive in invasive species management.
  • Working with the Peconic Estuary Program staff on ecological projects to enhance the estuary's habitats, including planning and implementation of fish passage projects.
  • Preparation of Parks information for the County's annual report under the MS4 storm water permit.
*This position does not offer relocation assistance at this time**Sponsorship is not available for this roleAnnual Salary: $44,266.00 OPEN COMPETITIVE Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree in mathematics, one of the natural or physical sciences, environmental studies or a related field.This role is a Provisional AppointmentA provisional appointment, which occurs only in the competitive class, is a temporary appointment to a position for which no eligible list exists or for which an eligible list exists with fewer than three candidates who are willing to accept the position. In order to become permanent, the employee who is provisionally appointed must take the next examination for the position in question. The appointment to the position is then made from among the three highest scoring passing candidates who indicate their willingness to accept the position.
