EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I
DUTIES AND FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The incumbent in this class operates a variety of County equipment and performs manual
tasks in connection with such operations. Work is performed under general supervision
of the department manager. This position requires weekend and holiday work as well as
participation in the twenty-four hour (24) on-call rotating schedule.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Operates various County equipment such as but not limited to dump truck, vactor truck,
backhoe, skid steer, mini excavator, fork lift, tractor; assists in inspecting, cleaning,
lubricating, and oil changes; makes minor repairs on equipment; assists in the
maintenance of sewer cleaning truck(s); assists in the operation of the sewer jet to clean
out clogged sewer lines; assists in the maintenance of sewer line laterals, pumps stations,
wet wells and treatment tanks; reads blueprints; maintains accurate records for billing
purposes; keeps daily records; performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Good knowledge and skill in the operation of various equipment; good knowledge of the
hazards and safety precautions of work; ability to follow oral and written directions;
ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to County equipment; ability to establish
and maintain effective relationships with staff, department heads, representatives from
other agencies and coworkers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum High School Diploma or GED with at least one (1) year of experience in the
operations of various types of equipment; must be able to obtain and retain a valid
commercial driver license to operate County commercial vehicles and equipment;
maintain an acceptable driving history: good verbal and written communication skills;
solid customer service skills; basic computer and data entry skills.
