Job Type Full-timeDescriptionJob Summary: Under general supervision, this position is responsible for maintaining and repairing fleet vehicles, tractors, and equipment.Essential Functions:
  • Performs routine to complex maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on all types of vehicles and equipment to include police vehicles, fire vehicles and apparatuses; sanitation vehicles, heavy construction equipment; loaders; dump trucks; and small engines and small equipment;
  • Performs preventative maintenance of light to heavy equipment; including changing oil and filters, lubricating and checking fluids, belts, hoses, tires, and brake systems;
  • Performs work according to service manuals, schematics and hydraulic flow charts;
  • Identifies problems by performing routine to technical diagnostics including, mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic;
  • Tests equipment for proper operation by operating/driving and using test equipment;
  • Determines if parts will be repaired or replaced, and initiates ordering of parts; Responsible for selecting, ordering, and purchasing parts using proper purchasing procedures;
  • Estimates cost and time to determine the most cost effective methods of repair;
  • Diagnoses and repairs air conditioning and heating units;
  • Diagnoses and repairs front-end problems on cars and light and heavy trucks and makes necessary repairs and alignment to vehicles; operates alignment machine;
  • Performs tune-ups and specialized electrical wiring on cars, pickups and specialized equipment;
  • Perform road side service on all equipment as required, using work zone safety equipment;
  • Helps with the preparation of vehicle and equipment specifications;
  • Performs other fleet related duties and responsibilities as needed;
  • Washes and performs maintenance on equipment;
  • Maintains daily work records on work done, materials used and time spent;
  • Performs maintenance and full repairs on small engine equipment such as weed eaters, lawn mowers, riding lawn mowers, tampers, blowers, chain saws, and cement mixers;
  • Answers road calls for service including repair and/or towing as needed;
  • Disposes of hazardous waste material (hydraulic fluid, gasoline, etc.) according to established guidelines;
  • Cleaning up shop area;
  • Display courteous, civil, and respectful behavior to all persons and shall make every effort to meet the needs of citizens requesting assistance;
  • Refrain from the use of abusive, indecent or profane language or gestures in the workplace, in the performance of duties or in the presence of a member of the public;
  • Perform duties in a manner that is fair, impartial, and without prejudice toward any person or group;
  • Refrain from arguing unnecessarily with any person or otherwise showing a lack of self-control, ridicule, or defame any employee, elected official or any other person or any agency of the City of Columbia;
  • Display responsibility for attendance and promptness and report to the work area on time.

  • Knowledge of large and small, gas and diesel engines;
  • Knowledge of electrical and hydraulic equipment, pumps, and motors, related to specialized pieces of equipment;
  • Knowledge of automotive warehouse and purchasing procedures;
  • Knowledge of operating light to heavy duty equipment and vehicles;
  • Knowledge of city street locations;
  • Must possess computer application skills that at a minimum include Microsoft Office Suite products including Word and Excel.
Ability:
  • Ability to perform routine to technical diagnostics on vehicles, tractors, and equipments and make appropriate repairs;
  • Able to perform routine and technical diagnostics and other trouble shooting procedures;
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, or basic vehicle and equipment drawings
  • Ability to utilize supporting hands tools, including wrenches (regular and impact), drills, jacks, driving tools (manual and pneumatic);
  • Ability to identify needed parts and supplies;
  • Ability to operate equipment or vehicle being repaired;
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals;
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs;
  • Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; listens and gets clarification; responds well to questions; participates in meetings;
  • Ability to write clearly and informatively; edits work for spelling and grammar; able to read and interpret written information;
  • Ability to follow instructions, responds to management direction; completes tasks on time or notifies appropriate person with an alternate plan;
  • Ability to meet scheduling and attendance requirements
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:
  • Valid Commercial Driver License, Class B
Preferred Education:
  • Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two year-college or technical school; or two to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
