The Poquoson Public Works Department is seeking qualified candidates for the above position. Applications will be accepted in the City Managers Office, 500 City Hall Avenue or online. General Definition of Work Performs skilled work operating a variety of small to medium automotive, construction and specialty equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Public Works Supervisor. Limited oversight is exercised over workers. Essential Functions Performs general infrastructure maintenance on streets, street signs and drainage projects. Performs preventive maintenance on equipment. Manages and oversees small crews to complete job assignments and operates smaller to medium sized motorized equipment including asphalt patching units, farm tractors, small dump trucks and other small motorized equipment. Responds to citizen complaints and department requests. Assists other departments as needed. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of the operation, maintenance, capabilities and limitations of equipment used in area of assignment; general knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of equipment; thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; skill in the operation of equipment; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to detect signs of mechanical failure of equipment; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public. Education and Experience High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Physical Requirements This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions, frequently requires climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms and tasting or smelling and occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic). Special Requirements Virginia Department of Transportation Flagger Certification within three months of hire. Valid commercial driver's license with Class A endorsement, or the ability to obtain within six months of hire. Forklift certification within six months of hire. J-18808-Ljbffr
