Examples of Work PerformedPerforms all tasks that can be performed by a Heavy Equipment Operator I plus the following additional tasks:Grade roads, spread caliche and assist in the construction and opening of new roadsMay clean / clear or build bar ditches according to surrounding ground elevations and availability of drainageExamines vehicles for needed repairs and routine maintenance and reports necessary repairsOperates a variety of types of gasoline and diesel equipment and light, medium and heavy equipment involved in road construction and maintenance projects, such as backhoes, front-end loaders, forklifts, dump trucks, and related equipmentPrepares daily reports and logs related to quantities of materials used, types of equipment, work hours, and project statusPerforms routine and preventive vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair to ensure proper operating conditionsPerforms general maintenance / manual labor as requiredLoads trucks; hauls dirt, gravel, caliche, water, garbage, and/or other materials and equipment to designated areas and unloads trucksPerforms traffic control set up on job sites to ensure safe working environmentsReports and/or repairs malfunctions on light, medium and heavy equipmentMay work on the reconstruction or rehabilitation of streets, surface maintenance, traffic control, or drainage zonesShred road right-of- wayMay assist during emergency situations such as floods, severe weather, and accidentsPerforms other related duties as assigned Education and ExperienceGraduation from a high school or equivalent (GED) required One (1) year of experience working with light, medium and heavy equipment Must have the ability and the knowledge to make minor repairs and adjustments to assigned equipmentCertificates, Licenses and Registration:Preferred - Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Must have a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator's licenseMust be able to be insured by the County's insurance carrierPositions of a safety sensitive nature are subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal regulationsKnowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of construction maintenance, repair, and operation of light and heavy equipment, including vehiclesAbility to maintain records of materials, supplies, time, and work performed; and to work effectively with the publicKnowledge of the safe operation of the equipment used and of the provisions of the Texas motor vehicle code relating to the operation of equipment / vehiclesSkill in operating heavy equipment effectively and safelyAbility to perform strenuous work in outdoorsAbility to understand and follow oral instructionsBilingual (Spanish and English) with the ability to converse fluently in both languages preferredAbility to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manualsKnowledge to perform basic mathAbility to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written and/or oral instructionsAbility to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situationsAbility to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memosEmployee may be assigned other duties in addition to those listedDuties may change according to the changing needs of the CountyThe County of Hidalgo offers a full range of employee benefit programs for eligible employees, retirees, and their families.
