STARTING PAY = $19.00 per hourSUMMARYUnder direct supervision of supervisor or foreman, this position performs skilled operation of asphalt distributor truck. Employee may operate medium-sized trucks (2 ½ ton to 10 cu.yd. - 46,000 GVW), other equipment, and on occasion front-end loaders of up to 2 ½ cu.yd. capacity. Services and operates front and rear of asphalt distributor, including making adjustments and minor repairs to equipment. Employee may be required on occasion to perform manual unskilled work. May occasionally supervise small crew of Utility Workers during various maintenance operations. This position will be required to work shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime as necessary by the department, and during inclement weather. This position is considered weather essential personnel.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES- Responsible for various asphalt related functions during crack pouring, seal coating, alley sealing, and year-around priming activities.
- Operates asphalt distributor during seal coating, alley sealing, and for year-around priming as needed.
- Operates and has full working knowledge of liquid asphalt storage facility (valves, piping, heating system, etc.).
- Responsible for maintenance and repair to asphalt storage facility.
- Unloads asphalt transports (5,000-6,000 gallons) into storage tanks.
- May operate sanding unit and /or oversee small crew during crack pouring.
- Washes, lubricates, adjusts and performs minor repairs to asphalt distributor or other equipment.
- May be required to do manual work when necessary.
- Proper completion of daily job reports.
- Operates truck-mounted snowplow, sand spreader, and chemical de-icer spreader during emergency work.
- Operates and is knowledgeable with light and medium-sized trucks and equipment.
- May operate loader of up to 2 ½ cu.yd. capacity if necessary.
- May operate equipment in other comparable pay categories or be willing to train if necessary.
- Perform other job related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSMinimum of eighth (8th) grade education with two (2) years experience in the operation of light and medium equipment and trucks including one (1) year experience on an asphalt distributor. Some college desirable and high school education preferred. Some formal training or instruction in the storage and handling of asphalt materials preferred. Must be able to obtain a Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License (with X Hazardous Materials and Tanker endorsement) when scheduled to attend CDL training course during probationary year.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES- Must have good working knowledge of asphalt distributor and other medium-sized trucks and equipment.
- Should be knowledgeable in the use of all hand tools, both manual and power.
- Should be well versed in all phases of the liquid asphalt storage operation, i.e., heater, valves and piping, thermostats, and storage tanks.
- Must be able to work long hours around hot materials (350 degrees F)
- Ability to work long, extended hours under stressful situations and integrate well with other employees.
- May require some light to medium lifting (30-50 lbs.) during minor repair or adjustment to equipment, but could involve heavier lifting (50-110 lbs.) when performing manual tasks
- Ability to work in close quarters in and around all utilities (gas, water, electric)
- This position is subject to 24-hour emergency call out.
