The purpose of this classification is to operate heavy equipment in a variety of construction and maintenance projects in Recreation, Cemetery, Public Works, and other departments. Duties include assisting labor crews with installation and maintenance tasks as assigned.Operates a variety of heavyand other equipment such as front-end loader, limb loader, street sweeper, motor grader, bulldozer, track hoe, backhoe garbage rear loader, bucket truck, line truck, wacker packer, excavator, root cutter (electric eel), rubber tire roller, vibratory compactor, side loader, genie truck, prime truck, concrete mixer, pulvi-mixer, industrial broom, water truck, heavy dump truck, patch truck, tar truck, sand truck, gradall, tractor-trailer, flat/level rod, tractors, 15'mower, 6'mower, hydro seeder, leaf blower, weed eater, chipper, chain saw, shovel, rake, boom ax, curb trimmer, kut-kwik mower, and related equipment.
Performs pre-trip inspection to ensure safe operations of trucks and equipment per regulations; performs routine maintenance on trucks such as cleaning, checking tires, and maintaining fluid levels; performs minor repairs or reports malfunctions as appropriate; prepares trucks and equipment for daily assignments
Performs work orders; assists labor crews; may flag traffic around work sites.
Performs manual labor such as shoveling dirt, gravel, or concrete, digging trenches, laying pipe, setting forms, finishing concrete, raising/lowering manholes, opening/closing graves, disinterring/reentering graves, collecting/hauling refuse and/or hazardous waste, loading/unloading trucks/trailers, or related tasks.
Repairs, builds or installs, sewer pipes, man holes, catch basins, lift stations, valves and/or leaks; may cut and thread pipes.
Performs a variety of grounds-keeping duties such as clearing brush and stumps, mowing, edging, pruning, collecting trash, planting trees/shrubs/grass, raking leaves, and related tasks.
May assist in various maintenance tasks involving city facilities; may perform sandblasting and painting tasks; may pressure wash surfaces.
Receives various forms, reports, work orders, time sheets, invoices, blueprints, maps, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed; performs other related duties as required.High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by Vocational/Technical training; and three (3) years previous experience and/or training in heavy equipment operation required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. May require written and/or hands-on tests and confined space training. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s) or obtain it within six (6) months of hire. For Sewer Division: Class III Wastewater Collection Systems Certification preferred.Data Utilization: Requires the ability to determine, calculate, tabulate, or summarize data/information. Includes performing subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference and descriptive data and information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. May include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.

Physical Ability: Tasks involve regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 200 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks may require the ability to perceive and discern colors or shades of colors, sounds, odors, depths, textures, and visual cues or signals.
