ABOUT THIS POSITION The Parks and Recreation Department provides residents and visitors more than 41,000 acres of desert parks and mountain preserves. The parks feature 41 trailheads and more than 200 miles of trails, and 182 city parks. Additionally, there are 32 community and recreation centers, classes, and sports programs for all ages, 29 pools, eight golf courses, and a variety of specialty and cultural venues and facilities.The Parks and Recreation Equipment Operator III will safely and efficiently operate various specialized equipment in the Forestry section of Special Operations in the Parks and Recreation Department. The work requires considerable skill in manipulating heavy equipment in close proximity to traffic, pedestrians, and obstacles. Equipment operated includes rear loaders, articulated loaders, backhoes, brush/dump trucks, 2,000- and 3,000-gallon water trucks, knuckle boom hoists, stump grinders, aerial lift trucks, and various power and hand tools. Transporting heavy equipment safely by trailer is imperative.
IDEAL CANDIDATE - Knowledge of hydraulically operated equipment.
- Knowledge of traffic barricade setup, take down and working within a lane closure.
- Familiarity with Urban Forestry operations including rigging used in large tree removal, clean-up and planting activities.
SALARY Pay Range: $23.74 - $35.08 per hour.Hiring Range: $23.74 - $30.31 per hour.Pay Range Explanation:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - (1) Completion of a departmental training course (certified by Personnel) for equipment being tested,
- OR (2) be qualified for out-of-class pay as an Equipment Operator III,
- OR (3) log 120 hours on equipment being tested for,
- OR (4) have a minimum of two years of experience operating commercial equipment over two tons, six months of which must include equipment being tested for.
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
- Working irregular hours, second, and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.
- Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
- Required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) medical examination and possess a class A Commercial Driver License with a Tanker (N) endorsement at time of hire.
- Requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust; and walking for prolonged periods which may include walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
- General experience with a tree care or landscaping operations.
- Experience working in streets, traffic, and around the public.
- Experience operating heavy equipment.
