1. POSITION TITLE: Equipment Operator III
2. DEPARTMENT: Public Works
3. PAY GRADE: 130 (Nonexempt)
4. SALARY: $39,658.00
5. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK OF THE POSITION:
The incumbent of this position is responsible for the operation of construction equipment. Work involves the safe and efficient operation of construction equipment in the maintenance and construction of streets. Responsible for transferring equipment to and from job sites in compliance with traffic laws. This work requires constant attention to safety of operation in order to prevent accidents. Work is performed in accordance with instructions received from the director; and employees in this class may lead subordinate laborers and lower-level equipment operators on a specific job.
6. DUTIES OF THE POSITION (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY):
Operates construction equipment (backhoe, front-end loader, hi-lift, snowplow, street sweeper, roller, street flusher, dumb truck, backhoe, motrim, or comparable equipment); assists in street repair and resurfacing and must have ability to operate all classified equipment; performs minor servicing and maintenance of assigned equipment; refers major problems to street superintendent at the first sign of trouble; when not operating heavy equipment, operates light equipment; works in the repair shop or works as a laborer or semi-skilled laborer. Does related work as assigned and required.
7. DESCRIPTION OF SUPERVISION RECEIVED BY AN INCUMBENT OF THIS POSITION:
Supervision is received from the Director of Public Works, Public Works Operations Supervisor, or their designee.
8. DESCRIPTION OF SUPERVISION EXERCISED BY AN INCUMBENT OF THIS POSITION:
The incumbent occasionally leads subordinates at job sites
9. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR PERFORMANCE OF WORK:
Knowledge of capabilities of heavy construction equipment and mechanical operation; good knowledge of traffic and safety rules and accident prevention practices; skills in
operation of heavy motor equipment in all types of weather conditions; ability to troubleshoot the system and recommend remedial action; ability to understand oral or written instructions and communicate to subordinates; ability to perform assignments with a minimum of supervision and good physical condition. Must be able to interpret blue prints for construction projects and make field drawings.
10. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE NECESSARY FOR WORK PREPARATION:
High school diploma or equivalent, five years' experience in operating heavy construction equipment and must possess a valid WV CDL, Class B license with air brakes and tanker endorsement, and an equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid Class B CDL with tanker endorsement or must obtain your CDL permit within 180 days and a CDL license with tanker endorsement within one year of your hire date. If you fail to achieve either part of this requirement your employment will be terminated.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to walk, sit, stand, bend, climb stairs, walk on uneven surfaces, crouch, crawl, kneel and stoop. Additionally, the employee will be required, at times, to lift, carry or push/pull supplies, materials, equipment and/or items weighing up to 50 pounds while performing the duties of this position. Work is primarily conducted outdoors. Incumbents of this position will be exposed to noise, chemicals, dust and inclement weather conditions.
