Deadline to Apply: November 22, 2024. $26.31 to $34.64 DOQ.Position ObjectivePerforms intermediate work assisting with road construction, repair, and maintenance activities by operating heavy vehicles and equipment, clearing debris and brush from roadside, conducting snow and ice removal activities, monitoring and maintaining vehicles and equipment, and related work. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Maintenance Superintendent, Shop Superintendent, and the Assistant Maintenance Superintendent. - Operates equipment of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, materials and supplies.
- Performs snow and ice control (plowing, winging back ditches, salting and sanding, municipal cleanups) in hazardous conditions.
- Performs various roadway maintenance activities including tree/brush/stump removal, bituminous crack sealing and repair, thawing/cleaning/ replacing culverts, frost boil work, placing advance warning signs, flagging traffic, building storm sewer items, performing concrete work, repair guardrail, removal of dead animals, installation and repairing mailboxes and fences, grading roadbeds, ditching, set up and maintain erosion control measures and treatments.
- Operates trucks, heavy construction and power equipment, such a motor graders and dozers, tandem axle trucks, front-end loaders, skid steers, tractors and mowers, 7500 gallon water tanker, snowplows, chainsaws, high pressure power washers, a variety of trailers, wood chippers and scissor lift, fork lift and excavators.
- Perform various types of welding and cutting work; fabricates tools and parts as needed to perform their duties.
- Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to Shop Superintendent and Maintenance Superintendent; cleans equipment and keeps in good working order.
- Performs emergency road repairs and snow and ice control on a 24-hour basis.
- May act as a group leader to a small crew performing roadway maintenance, when necessary.
- Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
- Required to complete and keep current training including, but not limited to, OSHA, Gopher State One, MSHA training, chain saw training, forklift certification, MMUTCD Field Manual on Temporary Traffic Control Zone Layouts - Flagger certification.
- Read and interpret construction plans.
- Confined space entry when inspecting and repairing storm sewer pipes and structures.
- Identify potential roadway hazards and report and repair as required.
- Install and remove snow removal equipment on trucks.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of the techniques and procedures for the operation of equipment that is over 50 horsepower.
- Knowledge of the practices and procedures of roadway maintenance.
- Knowledge of the procedures for routine/preventive maintenance of County equipment.
- Knowledge of all current State & Federal driving laws.
- Knowledge of Department safety policies and practices, including proper Work Zone Safety techniques.
- Knowledge of welding & cutting practices.
- Knowledge and ability to perform basic mechanical duties.
- Skill in operation of all County equipment over 50 horsepower.
- Ability to perform physical labor over extended periods of time.
- Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations.
- Knowledge of the methods, materials and tools uses in the maintenance or roads.
- Ability to work and to drive in varying weather conditions including, but not limited to, rain, snow, ice covered roads, blizzard, dark, low visibility and hazardous conditions.
- Must have the ability to effectively and tactfully deal with the general public even if/when they become confrontational.
- Knowledge of DOT regulations and securing loads.
- Ability to operate computer scales.
Desired Minimum QualificationsHigh School diploma or GED and moderate experience, or a combination of equivalent education and experience.Special Qualifications
- Must possess a valid Class A CDL license with air brake endorsement.
- Valid driver's license in the State of Minnesota.
