DescriptionCOUNTY OF WARRENEQUIPMENT OPERATOR GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: FLSA Status: Non-ExemptPerforms intermediate semiskilled work in the operation of various motorized equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:The ability to operate or the ability to learn to operate equipment including dump truck, back-hoe, front-end loader, bush hog, asphalt roller, tractors, motorized mowers and related equipment; performing minor equipment maintenance and service.(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
- Drives and operates various vehicles and equipment such as dump truck, back-hoe, tractors, etc.
- Maintains operational safety of vehicles and equipment.
- Excavates work areas such as roadways, parking lots and ball fields.
- Assists with construction, maintenance and repair of sidewalks, curbs, culverts, man-holes, roads and rights-of-way.
- Prunes, removes and plants trees and shrubs.
- Installs and repairs fences.
- Transports dirt, gravel, mulch, sand, brush and debris to and away from job sites.
- Picks up trash in park system; maintains, prepares and sets up ball fields.
- Orders and purchases supplies.
- Cares for and maintains tools in proper working order.
- Installs and maintains playground equipment.
- Participates in construction, maintenance and repair work when not operating equipment.
- Performs minor landscaping work when project is completed; seeds, fertilizes and applies chemicals to grounds.
- Assists with snow removal and ice control.
- Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:General knowledge of the practices and techniques of operating and servicing motorized vehicles and equipment; general knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to proper equipment operation; skill and care in the operation of several types of trucks and construction equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school is required and some experience in the operation of motorized equipment is preferred. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
