Equipment Operator - Steel AmericaPurpose:Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking a Equipment Operator to support operations in Norfolk, VA.This role is responsible for operating various mobile equipment in support of industrial fabrication and machining operations. Daily activities will include moving materials and completed units as directed by supervision.
Job Description: - Operate mobile equipment including but not limited to forklifts, combilifts, telescope handlers, electric boat trailers, shipyard transporters, and hustlers to move materials and completed units.
- Operate heavy equipment of various sizes and weights, safely and efficiently.
- Coordinate with maintenance department to maintain, refuel, repair, and/or inspect mobile equipment.
- Perform minor maintenance on mobile equipment as needed.
- Perform daily pre and post inspections using the Operator's Daily Checklist for all mobile equipment used.
- Follow all company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.
- Perform servicing and maintenance of equipment, when not operating work within a maintenance shop environment as a mechanic.
- Able to operate heavy and complex equipment requiring skill and the exercise of independent judgment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: - Must have a High School Diploma and 1-2 years of experience working in a shipyard or industrial fabrication environment.
- Must have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
- Must be able and willing to obtain operator certifications for various mobile equipment.
- Must be able and willing to obtain a Class A CDL.
- Must be able to work overtime and weekends as needed.
- Must be able to maintain regular attendance.
Desired Qualifications: - Class A CDL preferred.
- Experience operating a variety of mobile equipment highly preferred.
- Experience operating overhead cranes preferred.
- Experience supporting rigging operations highly preferred.
Travel Requirements: - Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements: - Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
- Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
- May ride ships at sea for extended periods
- Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
- Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
- Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
- While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
- Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
- Frequent use of respirator.
- Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
