Overview:
This position is responsible for processing all Emergency Room admissions for the hospital. The employee maintains the data integrity in the Mater Patient Index of the computer system.
Responsibilities:
Essential Functions:
- Assists all patients, family members, physicians, visitors, vendors and employees in a friendly, courteous and professional manner.
- Supports the hospitals mission, vision and values by presenting a positive and polite manner and offering assistance to all customers.
- Registers Emergency Room patients.
- Follows all registration requirements under the EMTALA laws.
- Capture and save all patient headhsots into Lakeside Medical Centers (LMC) electronic health record (EHR).
- Confirm with the patient their demographic and enter any corrections or updates into LMCs EHR.
- Verify and update the patients insurance coverage into LMCs EHR.
- Complete the Medicare Secondary Questionnaire for all Medicare recipients.
- Copy and scan into LMCs EHR the patients identification, insurance cards and all other pertinent information related to the admission.
- Collects co-pays, coinsurance and/or discounted payments from Emergency Room patients at the time of service.
- Obtains all proper signatures for patients Consent to Treatment and the Health Care Districts Notice of Privacy Practices forms.
- Advise and obtain the patients signatures on all Medicare patients Important Message from Medicare, Medicare Outpatient Observation Notification, or the Hospital Outpatient Observation Notification Form according to LMCs Procedures.
- Completes observation and inpatient admissions as directed by physicians orders due to an emergency room level of care changes and/or direct admissions.
- Complete Communications Operator duties as needed.
- Submit observation or inpatient admission notifications as required by the payer.
- Register after-hours ancillary visits.
- Register patients using Lakeside Medical Centers downtime procedures.
- Provides written receipts for payments received to the patient.
- Verifies the Emergency Room registrations for accuracy and insurance eligibility.
- Explains patient responsibilities related to insurance plans, co-pays and coinsurance.
- Maintain productivity records in accordance with the departments policies and procedures.
- Maintains observance of the fire panel, code blue panel and blood bank panel and notifies appropriate hospital personnel in the event that an abnormality occurs as needed.
- Attends and participates in monthly department staff meetings
- Attends mandatory department and hospital in-service training sessions.
- Appropriately routes patients complaints.
- Adheres and follows all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
- Applies the hospitals principles of safety in all work practices. Reports any identified safety risks or incidents per the hospitals policies and procedures.
- Maintains current knowledge of requirements and regulations of specific insurance carriers and corresponding insurance forms, as well as state collection laws and HIPAA as it applies to admitting and registration.
- Maintains a neat, orderly and safe work area.
- Follows all infection control and employee health policies and procedures at all times.
- Maintains patient confidentiality at all times according to the hospitals established policies and procedures.
- Emergency duty may be required of the incumbent that includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters or to perform other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to threats or disasters, man-made or natural.
Qualifications:
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years experience preferred. Knowledgeable in Medicare compliance guidelines, Florida Medicaid and third-party insurance companies preferred.
