Estimating Department Director The Erosion Company is a leading provider of erosion control solutions. We are among the largest and most experienced erosion control and site compliance contracting companies in the United States. Our dedicated team of professionals serves thousands of customers on a variety of construction throughout the Southeast every day. Job Description: We seek a highly skilled and experienced Estimating Department Director to lead our estimating team and drive the strategic direction and day-to-day function of our estimating operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in erosion control and/or site work and the construction industry. They will also have a proven track record in managing estimating processes, take-offs, developing accurate cost estimates, and leading and directing a team of estimators. This role is crucial to our company's success, as it involves overseeing and improving the preparation of bid proposals, cost estimates, ensuring that projects are priced competitively and accurately, working with Sales and Ops to build jobs profitably, working with Sales and Customers to present our pricing and product in the most optimal manner, tracking wins and losses, and following up during and after jobs to ensure correct pricing and optimizing margins. Key Responsibilities: Leadership and Management: Develop and implement departmental strategies and objectives aligned with the company's goals. Set success metrics and goals and work to achieve targets. Foster a collaborative and productive work environment within the estimating department as well as coordinating with Sales, Ops, and Finance to optimize communication and results. Estimating and Cost Analysis: Oversee the preparation of detailed and accurate cost estimates for erosion control and construction projects, including, but limited to labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs. Analyze project plans, specifications, and other documentation to determine project requirements and potential risks. Develop and maintain estimating standards, procedures, and best practices to ensure consistency and accuracy. Work with Ops and Purchasing to ensure that all costs are known and updated accordingly. Review job, market, and customer pricing consistently to optimize both margins and winning jobs. Bid Preparation and Proposal Development: Lead the development of competitive bid proposals, including cost analysis, pricing strategies, and value engineering solutions. Collaborate with Ops, Sales, Finance, project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to gather information and clarify project details. Review and validate bid proposals to ensure they meet client requirements and company standards. Review and optimize presentation of estimates to improve job wins. Market Research and Benchmarking: Conduct market research to stay informed about industry trends, pricing, and competitive landscape. Benchmark estimating practices and costs against industry standards and competitors. Meet with vendors, customers, and collaborators as well as with Ops and Sales to improve knowledge that will optimize winning estimates. Track wins and losses of estimates as well as tracking why jobs were won or lost in order to improve profitability. Financial Management: Monitor and control estimating budgets and resources to ensure efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Prepare and present regular reports on estimating performance, project profitability, and departmental metrics to senior management. Review margin and revenue reports to optimize profitability. Client and Vendor Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers. Address any issues or concerns related to estimates, bids, or project costs in a timely and professional manner. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field or equivalent work experience preferred, but not required. Minimum of 7 years of experience in estimating within the erosion control and construction industry, with at least 3 years in a team leadership or managerial role. Proven track record in managing estimating processes and developing accurate cost estimates for various projects. Strong understanding of erosion control techniques, construction methods, and industry standards. Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in estimating software and tools (e.g., Bluebeam, ProEst, Timberline). Ability to analyze complex data, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions.
