Job Description:
The Estimator is responsible for delivering precise and competitive estimates for utility construction projects, ensuring all bids are complete and submitted on time. This role involves close coordination with subcontractors, clients, and internal departments such as Operations and Finance. The Estimator plays a crucial role in maintaining cost databases, updating bid templates, and ensuring successful bid outcomes. A thorough understanding of utility construction processes, particularly in telecom and power, is essential.PUSH Inc. is a privately owned premier communications and power utility contractor headquartered in Rice Lake, WI. who has been providing telecom infrastructure to connect people globally for 50 years through its dedicated team members who have integrity and continually strive for excellence.Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Prepare accurate and thorough estimates and bids in alignment with company standards and project specifications.
  • Review all bids with supervisors before submission and ensure all documentation is complete.
  • Conduct detailed project take-offs at least two days prior to bid submission, collaborating with Operations, the President, and key stakeholders.
  • Maintain and update the company's cost history library monthly to ensure up-to-date data for future estimates.
  • Track and manage bid-hit ratios and the bid pipeline, providing weekly updates to the President.
  • Compare job costs to bid estimates post-project with Operations and Finance, adjusting future bid rates as necessary.
  • Update and maintain a robust subcontractor database, ensuring quality bid coverage with at least four quotes per trade or material over $5,000.
  • Oversee the company's subcontractor list and bid request software, updating both monthly.
  • Manage all proposal and bid documentation, including schedules, team qualifications, and bid requirements.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings, walk-throughs, and award meetings as necessary to gather critical project information.
  • Ensure crew and material bid rates are accurate and updated quarterly based on market conditions.
  • Prepare and submit change order requests within 24-48 hours as required by clients or Operations.
  • Verify and report on cost differences between bid and construction sets, preparing variance reports as needed.
  • Assist Operations with estimating change orders and other project-specific estimating needs.
  • Participate in pre-construction and project close-out meetings to ensure bid accuracy and project alignment.
  • Conduct or coordinate site visits to assess project conditions before bidding.
  • Research materials, labor, equipment, and transportation costs, obtaining competitive quotes and negotiating for the best rates.
  • Maintain meticulous records of estimates, actual costs, and any deviations throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience:Education: Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field preferred but not required.Work Experience: 3-5 years of industry experience in estimating or a related position utilizing utility construction units.Industry Knowledge: Strong understanding of utility construction processes, particularly in power and telecom, with the ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical documents, and specifications. Proficiency in estimating software, cost management tools, and industry-specific technology.Requirements / Experience:
  • Ability to read and interpret staking sheets, blueprints, contracts, and other engineering documents related to utility construction.
  • Strong understanding of utility operations, including equipment and products used in both telecom and power sectors.
  • Knowledge of fiber and power test equipment, including proper usage and interpretation of results.
  • In-depth knowledge of utility construction processes, technical applications, materials, and bidding practices.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and prepare all job-related reports and bid documents.
  • Proven ability to interact professionally with clients, vendors, subcontractors, and internal teams to ensure project success.
  • Proficiency in preparing accurate and detailed estimates that align with project needs and company standards.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and efficient in handling stressful situations and workloads.
  • Strong multitasking skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
