The New York Institute for Special Education

Bronx, NY

The mission of The New York Institute for Special Education is to provide quality educational programs and support to the students and families in a safe, caring environment, to awaken and inspire student curiosity, lifelong learning and fulfillment.

The New York Institute for Special Education (NYISE or The Institute), a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian educational facility that provides quality programs for 200 children who are blind and visually impaired as well as to preschoolers who are developmentally delayed, seeks a visionary, innovative, and experienced leader to serve as its executive director (ED). NYISE is chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York for and on behalf of the State Education Department, is accredited by the National Commission for the Accreditation of Special Education Services (NCASES) and is governed by a board of trustees.

This is a unique opportunity to assume the leadership of an established and highly respected provider of special education and to help shape policy and practice in New York State and in the broader national arena. The ED will work cooperatively with a leadership team, oversee more than 200 staff, and lead a financially healthy institution with a $31.9 million annual operating budget. The role of executive director calls for a strategic and results-oriented professional with proven organizational leadership experience and a deep commitment to NYISE's mission. The executive director will support the recruitment and retention of highly qualified and committed staff and advocate tirelessly on behalf of NYISE to local, state, and federal officials. The ED will ensure that the school will use cutting-edge technology including artificial intelligence to strengthen programming and resources on the campus. The executive director will also lead the development of a strategic plan and related initiatives that make significant contributions to the field of special education while mobilizing the staff, board, and other constituents. Above all, the ED must reflect the integrity and dedication that has been a hallmark of The Institute for almost 200 years.
