I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

It is the academic mission of The George Washington University's School of Business (GWSB) to be a preeminent business school recognized for scholarly research, teaching excellence, innovative curricula, and focus on the responsible management of organizations in the global environment. In support of this mission, the School is searching for an Executive Director of the F. David Fowler Career Center.

The Executive Director is charged with providing strategic vision and leadership for comprehensive career services for all GWSB undergraduate and graduate students and alumni. This position will report to the Dean of the George Washington School of Business (GWSB) and represent the business school on GW's university-wide Career Services Council (CSC).

This leadership position oversees a function that provides vital student services that advance students' personal, academic, and career goals. This position oversees the development, delivery, and evaluation of ongoing career initiatives by providing effective, high-quality, student-focused programs and services managed by the team. Additionally, this position oversees and directs integrated program delivery related to career learning, including career assessment, career consulting, interview preparation and coaching services, skill building, and education activities, industry-related experiential learning programs & employment activities, career development, and job search workshops, internship and networking activities. This position facilitates the creation of new and enhanced student opportunities and experiences in the public, private, and non-profit sectors, as well as employer outreach and relationship management. This is a management position at the university that, in addition to leading a work unit, leads and supervises staff directly, makes hiring decisions, provides coaching, training, and mentoring, manages performance, and determines future staffing needs.

Key responsibilities of the Executive Director:

  • Lead a process to continuously improve, innovate, and develop effective programs and services that map to the changing economy, shifting career interests of students/alumni, and competency requirements of employers.
  • Work with the Executive Director of Marketing & PR to develop a Career Center brand that positions FDFCC as a leader in the area of talent development and acquisition.
  • Develop and offer programs and services to strengthen international student acculturation, communication skills, and acclimation to job search in the USA.
  • Engage with employers in Greater Washington to develop and maintain strong relationships to expand internship and employment opportunities for students and alumni.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effective use of new social media portals.
  • Work closely with the Finance Department to maximize efficient use of funds and to develop and manage a meaningful departmental budget.
  • Manage a diverse team of coaches and employer relations professionals.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10 years of relevant professional experience, or a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 8 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Eight years of leadership experience in business school career services or related corporate environments.
  • Knowledge of and interest in the latest related technology, including social networking platforms, as part of the job search.
  • Knowledge of the employment and hiring practices of the global business sector.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population of University and external stakeholders.
  • An entrepreneurial orientation with a proven track record of innovating and delivering results through a high-performing team.
