Job Description:

The Y is looking for a strong, committed leader who is ready to take the Y's premier residential Camp Loma Mar to the next level. With our strong programs, which include our summer camp, outdoor education and family camps, camp is a powerful and transformative experience for kids and families, that allow kids to develop and thrive as they step into new experiences. Our beautiful camp is located in the Pescadero Valley, which is proximate to San Francisco, San Jose and the East Bay. For a glimpse: Compensation includes a 3-bedroom, 2-bath cabin on property.

POSITION SUMMARY:

These general functions will be carried out in keeping with the Goals, Mission and Policies of the YMCA of the East Bay. In partnership with the Vice President, ensure the successful operations of Camp Loma Mar and other resident camping and outdoor enrichment programs including program development, volunteer recruitment, staff leadership, community relations, collaborations, budgeting, fundraising and financial results.

COMPENSATION:

Total compensation includes the following:

  • $80,000-$100,000 annual salary
  • Participation in the YMCA Retirement plan, with Y contributions equal to 10% of your base salary (% of contribution is subject to change) after two years of services.
  • Heavily subsidized medical and dental insurance coverage, with Employee only options that are fully covered.
  • Eligibility for employee paid programs such as additional Life Insurance, FSA plans, etc.
  • Eligibility for Paid Time Off accrued at six weeks per year
  • 8 observed paid Holidays per year and 4 personal Floating Holidays per year
  • Use of YMCA facilities in Northern California for you and your family
  • On-site house: 3-bedroom, 2-bath cabin

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide strategic and executive leadership to summer camp director and other full-time staff to ensure high-quality camping and outdoor enrichment programs are developed and executed efficiently and effectively.
  • Ensure the operational growth of the Camping and Outdoor Education program through program expansion and retention, pricing strategies, new site development, and collaborations.
  • Foster a climate of innovation to develop member/camper-focused programs to appeal to a diverse audience and changing demographics and lead programming staff in the planning, development and implementation of new program initiatives and activities.
  • Provide strong leadership to the Adventure Guides program and Family Camp ensuring growth and quality programming.
  • Support the annual sustaining campaign efforts. In coordination with Association financial development department, develop and maintain relationships with current and potential donors and funding sources.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor budget to meet or exceed budget targets, in accordance with Association procedures.
  • In collaboration with Human Resources recruit, develop, retain and motivate a highly qualified and mission-driven staff team.
  • Develop and maintain camp facilities that meet the needs of current and potential campers and the Association's safety, service, and security objectives.
  • Provide strong leadership to the development and management of effective committees and volunteers.
  • Ensure high quality and well-maintained facilities, capital renovation and equipment.
  • Develop volunteer Camping Services Facility Group to achieve YMCA objectives. In collaboration with Vice President of Marketing, handle public relations, social media and marketing for the camp. Develop and maintain impeccable collaborative relationships with collaborating foundations and partners.
  • Create and implement marketing plan/strategy to maintain camp at 80% occupancy for both weekend use and outdoor education.
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned.

MEASURE OF EFFECTIVENESS

This position has a primary impact on the YMCA's ability to provide a high-quality camping and outdoor education program. Therefore, the effectiveness of the fulfillment of this position should be measured by:

  • Budgets will be met, revenue achieved, and cash managed according to sound practices established by the Finance Department;
  • Program is growing and in a dynamic state of evolution and improvement;
  • Staff and volunteers will be recruited/hired, supervised, developed and evaluated;
  • Campers will be retained with a high level of satisfaction;
  • Communications related to camping and outdoor education programs will be accurate and timely;
  • Relationships will be developed and sustained with collaborating community partners.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration/human services or equivalent
  • 6 years of progressive supervisory/leadership experience with at least 2 years of executive leadership experience
  • Proven leadership skills in staff management and development; strategic planning; budget development and financial control; and volunteer development
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to meet multiple demands and priorities and lead with a high level of emotional intelligence and maturity
  • Proven record of successful camping or outdoor education leadership including innovative program development
  • Ability to think conceptually, analyze and solve problems, and demonstrate assertiveness to manage the scope and diversity of the responsibilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook and other computer programs necessary to perform the duties of the job
  • YMCA Organization Leader certification preferred

Travel Required

Yes. Aperiodic travel to our Association offices located in Berkeley & Richmond
