Job Title: Executive Director

Position Reports to: Catholic Bishops of Georgia

FLSA: Exempt

Position Summary

The Executive Director for the Georgia Catholic Conference (GCC) informs and advises the Catholic bishops of Georgia on public policy issues considered by the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the state and federal governments and represents the bishops in matters concerning public policy. This position oversees educational and public communications related to the Conference's priority issues, including developing and overseeing a legislative action network and all external communications for the Conference. The GCC represents the Archdiocese of Atlanta and the Diocese of Savannah.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Analyze law and public policy considering Catholic social teaching, canon law, and Catholic practices; defend the Church's position under the scrutiny of legislative hearings and the media.
  • Research public policy issues through the internet and legal databases.
  • Drafts public policy statements on behalf of the bishops to reflect the position of the Church on state and national issues.
  • Directly interact, as a registered lobbyist, with members of Congress, State legislators, and government agency personnel in presenting the Church's position on sensitive issues. Maintains relationships with other lobbyists who support the church's mission and those with opposing views.
  • Oversees all administrative duties, including maintaining the Georgia Catholic Conference website in collaboration with the archdiocesan webmaster.
  • Manage and organize events, including, but not limited to, Catholic Day at the Capitol and Faith and Public Policy seminars.
  • Presents to various parish groups throughout Georgia on Catholic social teaching, Catholic faith, and public policy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Catholic bishops of Georgia.

Education, Skills, & Experience

  • A professional background in law, public policy, or a related field is preferred
  • Practical knowledge and experience in the lawmaking process of the Georgia General Assembly
  • Commitment to continuous learning across a broad spectrum of subjects, such as public policy issues, law, theology, bioethics, and philosophy
  • Excellent writing and public speaking skills
  • Excellent research and analysis skills
  • Strength in decision-making and prudential judgment
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks at one time and meet deadlines.
  • Commitment to operate and act in a nonpartisan manner
  • A practicing Catholic in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church
  • Proven leadership skills
  • The highest standards of ethics and integrity, including the ability to pass a background screening

Comments:

The work week is generally 40 hours or more per week on a year-round basis; however, the position requires a willingness and flexibility in work hours when necessary to fulfill job responsibilities. The employee is subject to Personnel Policies and procedures prescribed for all personnel.
